COMMENTS. Started with a FireCuda, did not work (but not yet confirmed bad), never got a prompt to format in startup wizard. Tried barracuda, same problem 
Tried many many things. Solved by logging in to the Quad with a different device, which gave me toe format prompt, and it all ended well.
