Tablo unusable after firmware

Tablo has been working great since purchasing last month. Updated to latest firmware.

  • Roku won’t connect. Stuck on ‘Connecting to Tablo’
  • iOS plays Library content; won’t play Live. Get ‘failed to decode’ playback error.

I can ping device. I’ve have power cycled it. Reinstalling app on iOS does not fix. Reinstallinig app on Roku, detects Tablo, connects, can watch Recorded and Live content. Close app and launch again on Roku gets stuck on ‘Connecting to Tablo’

Current workaround is to uninstall Roku app, go thru setup, and watch content. If I close the app, I have to go thru the setup again to connect.

No changes other then updating to latest firmware yesterday.

Sigh. College football playoffs starting in a few.

UPDATE: There appears, as mentioned in this thread, to be some server/API issues. That said, not being able to decode and playback Live video content on iOS is new. I was able to test this on my iPad as well. Perhaps something in the new firmware is prohibiting decode and/or playback on iOS deviices? Not sure if related to firmware update, but that’s the only thinig that changed for me. Otherwise, as stated, my Tablo setup has been rock solid since purchase last month.

UPDATE: Confirmed connectivity issues. Intermittent Connectivity Issues - December 20th

UPDATE: iOS playback fixed by changing my location to a nearby city and updatiing channels. I then changed it back to my home city. Idea came from here NEW - Tablo (4th Gen Only) Firmware Release (2.2.56) - #66 by CarbonCompound

I’m having the same problem. Reset device, then router, then deleted and reinstalled app on tvs. Finally got guide and live channels to show up on one tv but not others. Shoddy rollout I guess (?)

Updated my post with latest findings. Workaround is to unstall Roku app, go thru Setup, watch Recorded or Live, do not close app or you have to go thru the setup again to connect.

Yeah - would love to have prior firmware version back tbh.

I doubt that these are firmware problems. Tablo is having another server crash.

Update, yeah, once I left the app, I can’t get back in. Guess I’ll have to delete/reinstall everytime I want to watch tv

I don’t think a server call is necessary for iOS to playback and decode live video. I’m happy to be wrong, but if i am, I’ve got bigger questions. LOL!

It is possible that iOS has a problem with the firmware update and that it is just a coincidence that you tried to use Tablo during a server crash.

I’m not having any of the reported issues since the firmware update but reception seems to have taken a hit. At first I thought it might be weather-related on weak channels but now some of my stronger channels are having interruptions with random error messages.

Tablo will not run (even Live TV) if it cannot connect with its servers. They recently created “Off Line Mode” as a workaround for this, and it usually works pretty well. Right now they are experiencing a system wide issue that feels like a server issue. However, at least in my case, my Roku devices are not prompting me to go into Off Line Mode and I don’t know of a way to force it if it doesn’t ask for it.

I can get around it on my Android phone, but not on my Roku.

One good thing, if it can’t access the servers it still records normally anything that was already programmed. You just can’t create new programming.

Try removing and reinstalling the Tablo app on Roku. This should get you into Offline Mode. Thanks TV-Watcher-2-Much on another thread.

What’s bizarre is my iOS devices are flawless. So smooth, video live or library starts like “bam” so fast.

My Roku with the latest app update is dog meat. Lots of spinning circles and super laggy start up. If a show encounters pixelated segments it has an annoying pause that makes it unwatchable. But watching it from library on iOS it’s watchable, a quick pixel but the show keeps playing without pause and is watchable.

Clearly the Tablo TV is working fine, but the Roku app needs serious work.

Also Ethernet on Roku and Tablo, so it is ironic that my best experience is via WiFi to my iOS devices. Almost makes me want to pitch my Roku out, might have to pickup an Apple TV and see if it is better.

WAF rating is dropping precipitously (wife acceptance factor).

Please review these Roku suggestions.
