Yep. There’s an app called Informer that will tell you all about your Fire TV device:

A bit stupid that you need 3rd party software just to figure out what device you have.
There is a short code in settings but then you’ll have to look it up. Informer puts things in plain language.
Settings, My FireTV then About will tell you.
That only gives the general model name. I don’t think it tells you which version of that model. For example: for Roku, there is the Ultra line, but they have different model numbers (4640, 4660, 4661, 4670, 4800). Each one can have different capabilities.
I don’t know about a fire tv, but for the fire tv stick it will tell you information such as the generation number, software version number, and fire tv home version number.
That should be enough for tablo to determine if they support that model. For amazon devices once the model is released the OS major/minor number stays the same. Unlike Roku and Apple, they don’t seem to do major OS upgrades. You need a new model to get to the next OS version.
You can use this guide as well, checking the model number written on the stick. It will be in small font on the stick, on the opposite side of the Amazon logo.
You should be able to Ctrl+F that model number on that guide and it will take you to your respective device
For reference though, the first gen stick is W87CUN and the second gen is LY73PR.
One would think that for a fire tv stick the serial number on the box and viewable via my fire tv would contain a model number and match your gen 2 number. But
they don’t.
Black Friday deals are already going on, $30 gets you a new stick and $100 a new Cube which is the only FireTV device I would use.
So same issue with 2 year old firesticks that i have which i was using hoping not to spend extra $ until they cane out with the Samsum and ApplecTV TV app. Guess that I"ll have to wait longer to buy Tablo.
Why Fi5rstick? Chrosmcast with GoogleTV is easier and better
What type of firestick are you using? I’ve got the 1st gen and 2nd gen firestick 4k max… and both work just fine. IDK why Tablo asked a previous user to look at a serial number when you can find the information in Settings>Device & Software>About – right at the top, underneath “Device Name”.
When you say “same issue”… what happens when you search for “Tablo”?
As @beastman pointed out, Chromecast with GoogleTV will work, but if you look at the supported devices list, the Walmart Onn. 4k streaming box will do as well ($20 v $50), saving a ton of money if you’d only be needing it for one app.
I prefer my Firestick 4k Max over all of my STBs – faster than anything else I own – so I understand that you might want to stick to one type of device. Just trying to come up with some solutions. But it would be great if Tablo would give a list of supported models of each device to make this easier.
I tried the same thing. I had two 4k max firesticks, and installed the app no problem (though the tablo and apps did have various problems). I tried to install on an older Gen 2 firestick and it read unavailable.
I did backflips backing up the tablo APK from my max stick, then got the APK off of that device, then used a web server and downloader to install it on my Gen 2 Stick. It didn’t work. The app was super buggy on the older firestick. Basically unusable and actually it would lock up the tablo device forcing reboot.
I saw the new max firestick had a coupon, so I bought it and moved my old max to the TV I wanted to watch tablo on, and things are good.
Bottom line is I think the tablo is only compatible with newer firesticks. They should be more forthright about that fact.
Having same issue w/ my firesticks. 3rd gen ok but not 2nd. Going to get another 3rd gen
I have the same problem “unavailable”. Did you find a answer?
Hi @GC_Green,
If the app is showing as “Unavailable”, it’s likely due to your Fire TV device being older than we are able to support. If you check the Fire OS version, the app is only supported on those with 6 or above, which corresponds to Android version 7.1 or higher.
Fire OS 5 corresponds to Android version 5.1, which is just a bit too far out of date unfortunately.
