Are you guys thinking that some sort of Tablo server issue caused local OTA recordings to fail?
Tablo’s servers are only needed for the guide data. After that it is strictly the tuner sending the data to the Roku. (If you’re a fan of the Packers then I have a different theory. Ha ha)
Yes @gatorgogo my suspicion is these crashes may be due to the load on Tablo servers. I’m sure there was a lot of viewers (load) during the 49ers/Packers game, and that’s where I (and others) experienced the Tablo crashes. If we could only get some feedback (or confirmation) from @TabloSupport, that would be helpful for everyone to understand. AND maybe @TabloSupport is aware of this capacity issue and has not confirmed this with their customers.
My experience as a System admin and monitoring load of an application running on a server, makes me believe this is the issue. And if it is, obtaining additional hardware can take some time to obtain, configure and get it online to help with the more extreme load situations, like a football playoff game. In addition, I was a ChannelMaster customer for years. Their TV guide disappeared completely in the last few months, so I’m thinking Tablo had a huge increase in their customer base recently. Or that could just be a coincidence, who knows.
I will be interested to see if today’s (Sunday) playoff games has the same affect with more Tablo crashes. I hope @TabloSupport is taking note of this and making changes as quickly as possible for a more resilient platform.
Here’s another twist to the Roku crash to homepage problem on the Tablo Gen 4.
I have 2 Tablo Gen 4/Roku Ultra setups that use different Roku Ultra’s. One setup is getting the Roku crash to homepage problem and the other setup has no problems. Here’s the details…
The first setup is a Tablo Gen4/Roku Ultra 4670X (firmware 12.5.5 build 4174-46) I don’t have the crash back to the Roku home screen.
The other setup is a Tablo Gen4/Roku Ultra 4802X (firmware 12.5.5 build 4174-C2) it will occasionally crash back to the Roku home screen.
The 4802X is the more recent version of the Roku Ultra and it’s the one having problems!
Is anyone else using a Roku Ultra 4670X? Do you get the Roku crash to homepage issue or not?
My 2018 Roku Ultra, crashes, occasionally. IDK if this relates, but if my wife is easy on the remote. Like going 100mph through the menus, fw, rw, and play. It runs fine.
I have 4 Roku TVs, never crashed. 4k+ that doesn’t crash.
From what I have gathered… the data that is gathered is very little. As in size.
Are you saying if the data isn’t responding or slow, that will cause Live TV to buffer?
(genuinely curious)
Get 4 tuner instead because tuner is needed to make thumbnails and to scan
Well here we go again. Tablo won’t let us delete recordings unless we exit and go back in. And once it gave us the registration screen when opening and several times it would not open at all. Waited and waited then backed out and tried again. Took several tries. For the most part it works ok most of the time but we have been dealing with the above problems for months now and it’s getting old.
Thank you for your assistance.
My TV just updated to Roku 12.5.5. I uninstalled the Tablo app, restarted the TV, and reinstalled Tablo, in that order, and I’m still having the same issue. Tablo crashes after about 2 minutes.
Do you have any more suggestions?
Did ou do a system restart on the Roku or unplug it? Did you also restart the Tablo?
I have 3 Roku TVs and just cut the cord with my cable TV company. Was really hoping this would be a solution. I have tried everything suggested (cleared cache with the 5xHome feature, removed and re-installed app, restarted TV, latest version on both TabloTV and Roku TV) and the app still shuts down after about 10 minutes of watching live TV. This makes this solution unacceptable. I have a couple of weeks before my return window expires. I am in a quandary as to what to do next. Any suggestions from the group?
Have you had any luck with the 30 second pause while watching live TV?
Are you talking about pausing live tv for 30 seconds and then resuming? that works for me on my Roku TV.
I know that whole pause thing sucks. That seems to be the only solution for the odd Rokus that are still having that problem. TBH, it all feels random to me. Mine didn’t work until the latest Roku update, my mom’s never had a problem! Same exact of Roku purchased on the same day!
It’s weird that even on recordings the Tablo buffers 15+ seconds but not in live.
I found that I had another Roku Ultra 4670X, so I swapped out the Roku Ultra 4802X which was occasionally crashing back to the Roku Home screen. So far the 4670X is working perfectly. Time will tell, more later…
Yes and that didn’t work. However, I may have fixed the issue. I went to the advanced settings in my Roku and selected the option to “Reset Network Connections.”
You can’t just sign out of the network either. I tried that. You have to select the option to Reset Network Connections. How to system restart or factory reset your Roku streaming device|System restart or factory reset your streaming device
Since I did that, the Tablo app has been working for about 20 minutes now. Typically, before, it would only work for about 2 minutes.
Thank you very much for your assistance.
Update: It took about a half hour and a channel change, but my Tablo app started crashing again. So this didn’t fix the issue.
Everyone,
I just got off the phone with Tablo support and they said their development team is working on an update for the app to resolve this issue. They said they are on the verge of releasing the update, so I would expect that it should be released within the next week.
The Roku Ultra 4670X worked great for about 5 hours, but I did get one crash back to Roku homepage.
Great news from Neil1 that the Tablo Software Team is on the verge of sending out an update to fix this problem!
My wife was pulling up her recordings last night, recordings would play for 10 seconds, and the app kept closing to the Roku Home Screen. The Roku rebooted a few times too.
2018 Roku Ultra.
This happened during live OTA TV too.
I figured why not just FF through it and see if I could bypass. None of the FF or RW function worked. It repeated the same issue as above.
For giggles, I hooked up a 19-inch test TV to my Tablo Antenna. This TV actually has a signal meter and all the channels were at 1 BAR. But the Tablo read them in full strength. The test TV was pixeling, to me it wasn’t that BAD. But I guess it was enough that the Tablo and the Tablo APP didnt like it.
My wife did notice, when she pulled up recordings, IF the FF worked. Then the APP would act right. IF the FF didn’t work, the APP would freak out 10 seconds later. Either close or lock up and reboot the Roku.
Tomorrow AM I will move my antenna to a better spot. WHICH I thought it was in a good spot, per the Tablo signal meter, which said it was full bars. I will use my little test TV to confirm the signal.
More Food for thought.
I mostly use my tablo to playback recording and not as much live tv. I’m on a 4800x. On thanksgiving day I watched an entire football game with no crashes. And yesterday I watched about 1.5hrs straight live with no crash, I still need to do more extensive testing and report back of course.
