Tablo requiring internet is annoying

please let us use the tablo without internet access. i loose internet for a few days, with no access to streaming services, and can’t watch my recorded content on tablo. i can’t even watch ota channels. it is not easy for me to move my antenna connection to my tv, during these times.

They say they are working on it.

But with Tablo “immediate steps” could take months if not years.

Sort of like the appletv beta for normal people - 31 weeks and counting.

well that’s exciting , thank you

Without knowing how many tablo server touch points the various app have, you weren’t expecting an architecture and design to be re-engineered overnight were you. Each of those touch points have to do something when the tablo server response is not there to provide the requested data.

Consider putting in a splitter so the signal from your antenna goes to both your Tablo and your TV. Then, if you have any sort of Tablo failure you just need to change inputs on your TV.

At a minimum Tablo should give us the option of starting in Library instead of Home. It is annoying to have the app slow start because it is downloading information that I am not interested in seeing. That information should be loading in the background and not delaying my use of the app.

Good idea. Wouldn’t count on that happening. They have too many issues to deal with.

@TJP … I agree with you in general. When the internet is out there should be a library and live tv only option. I’m happy with no guide during an outage. But Library maybe borked because I don’t think the posters and data is stored locally (beyond the video file and some screenshots). I think it’s on the fly.

But only wanting data that is personal to YOU is a far stretch.

Frankly, this is a rookie mistake and fixing it probably requires just editing one line of code. You shouldn’t be making excuses for them.

You really think it’s that easy?

The machine was bred to connect to the server and retrieve everything you see. Imagine how many different lines need to be changed for each part of the system trying to reach out!

I’m not making excuse, I’m just keeping it real.

Changing 1 line of code to download all your data that you want on your tablo. So you can have most of the Tablo Experience when there is an internet outage… is insane. Especially for a $99 device. I got mine on sale.

1 line of code…

The unit has 128GB of internal storage. What do you think that is used for? And every station broadcasts its program data. It’s called PSIP: Program and System Information Protocol. No excuse for the unit to fail when Internet is down.

And you might have noticed (or spent a 2s google search) that Tablo does NOT get guide info from the broadcasters. Sounds like you’re up to 2 lines of code that need changed. Hmm.

Like @KimchiGUN … I make no excuses for Tablo’s “always connected” bullcrap. I’ve watched this thing improve for almost a year now. It’s slow going sometimes and I can only imagine how big of an undertaking it is to change a machine’s ENTIRE purpose…

Theoretically you could have an infinitely long line of code that contains hundreds of statements, as long as they are syntactically and semantically correct.

Point taken, and I can only imagine the person who’d create that nightmare.

That’s me. I worked on the OS so I would modify the editor to accept 512 characters for one line and then take the program to the compiler people to find out why it didn’t compile. It’s always fun to mess with your friends.
