Tablo Remote Connect fails with dynamic isp internet companies

The only way to use Tablo away from home is if you can assign a static ip address to your modem on your home network. Otherwise if home network goes down or reboots, the ip address changes and your remote connection device will NOT CONNECT. You have to bring device back home to pair on home network.
I confirmed this with Tablo customer support.

You mean assign a static internal IP address your Tablo device on your router? The WAN IP of your router assigned by your ISP can dynamically change, you do not need a static external IP address.

My mistake. I do mean a static internal IP address for my Tablo device changes. It changes when internet connection at home is down or rebooted. Any recommendations?

Yes your router may have a feature called “DHCP Reservation”. This feature allows the same internal IP address to always be assigned to the Tablo.

What is the make and model of your router?

Theoretically if you have UPnP enabled things will still or are suppose to work.

Of course this often does not happen for many users. Although not “officially” a requirement, as noted setting a DHCP Reservation (name varies by router vendor) is highly recommended and manually configuring port forwarding.

UPnP was/is suppose to allow things like remote connect work with out users needing to know about networking “stuff”…

NOTE: despite the port forwarding instructions saying to uncheck and recheck the enable box to verify - don’t it just assigns new port numbers and wrecks havoc.

I use a fixed wireless internet provider that only gives internal ip addresses to their subscribers. Apparently their network functions like a large company’s internal “intranet”. I pay $5 extra per month for an external ip address in order for Tablo Connect to work.

The external address is also required to access remote administration of my router and to access several old ip cameras. Cloud cameras work without the external address because they upload to the cloud and are then available for remote access.

Your issue is different than the OP’s and is likely not common as most traditional Cable and DSL ISPs provided external IP address to the ISP modem (or ISP combo modem / router). The OP already has Tablo Connect working, but due to rebooting of the modem the internal IP address of the Tablo changes which breaks the port forwarding.

My Modem/Router is a Ubee DDW36C1. Spectrum is provider. I can get in to router settings, but I don’t know if I can assign a static IP to Tablo

Correction: Ubee DDW36C

I just looked at the manual for the modem, it has the capability. Page 36 of the manual states “Select: Reserves the current private IP address to be assigned to this host statically when selected.”.

Go to “Basic”, then to “DHCP”, the Tablo should be listed there by its MAC address and the internal IP address currently assigned to it. Please note the MAC address of the Tablo’s Ethernet port is different than the Tablo’s WiFi connection. The MAC address written on the bottom of the Tablo is only for the Ethernet port.

I found the Mac address and internal IP address for tablo. I hit Select to highlight, but it will not show selected if I go out and back in again. So I selected again and hit “Force Available” on bottom and it removed the Mac & IP Address. Now it doesnt show up on DHCP. Should I reboot?

Thanks in advance for your help

Now Mac & IP Address back up! But it does not stay selected when I go out and back in

If that didn’t work, there should be a static IP section in the list on the left where “DHCP” is listed.

I entered Table Mac & IP address under Static Lease and it took. I rebooted modem/router and Tablo maintained same Mac & IP address.
Now I will have try the remote connect feature away from home.
Thank you so much for your help!

Glad it worked, but jut for those finding the thread in the future the Tablo’s MAC address will never change, it is always the same. So your router is now assigning the same internal IP address to your Tablo. Hope the port forwarding rules stick now.
