Tablo locks up causing reboot

This is with the Tablo 4th gen. Roku app the one before 1.3.0 (just updated). During play back of recorded content sometime the screen locks up then causes Roku to reboot. I then have to reboot the Tablo for it to playback. It corrupts the content of the recording so I can’t restart playback where I left off, I have to restart from the beginning and fast forward to the place I left off but even then if I try fast forward playback to skip commercials, it dosen’t show thumbnails any more or it dosen’t fast forward at all.

Before all this happens during playback, the picture will act as if there are reception problems, pixillation, or interuption like reception cutting out due to wind. I know wind will cause pixillation and its normal every once in a while but it seems Tablo doesn’t like it and locks up.

Is this a known issue or is my Tablo defective?

This may be the issue with Roku especially if the recording or live TV is not HD signal (standard format TV). https://support.tablotv.com/hc/en-us/articles/360040089091-Roku-Playback-Error-Video-Not-Playable-On-Your-Device#:~:text=This%20error%20is%20most%20often,to%20your%20Roku%20for%20playback.

No, I don’t get an error message. Just locks up with a grainy screen looking like a picture of an analog tv channel when there is no station signal. Also, these are football games Im recording so they are HD.

What Roku model do you have? https://support.tablotv.com/hc/en-us/articles/23602682301460-Known-Issue-Tablo-Roku-App-Crashing-During-Live-TV-Playback

I do have the model 3820R2 with software version 15.0 but that link says it happens during live TV play. My issue as described happens during recorded playback and I do not get the dialog box popping up to disable closed captioning.

I’m sure others will chime in, but the biggest recording problems I’ve had, always come from a weak signal… Use the best antenna you can find (the cheapies on Amazon are not worth it, fyi), and even with that, sometimes there’s just going to be signal drop-outs on occasion.. And Tablo’s just do not play well with weak signals…
Obviously, it’s different for everybody, but you must make sure you have a strong signal first, with each channel you’re depending on Tablo to record…
Point being, although there is an internal amplifier (which can help OR hurt) in the Tablo, if anyone is hoping the Tablo will improve their reception, they’re in for a world of frustration..
And maybe this is just a Roku issue for you, but just saying that a strong signal coming in, solves a lot of problems…

Thanks. I do have a robust rooftop antenna system. It has a power amp on the pole and my old Amazon recast got a solid signal with no problems recording. My TV tunner is rock solid. I don’t think the Tablo has the best tuner because I see occasional pixillation even watching live TV through the Tablo. All the channels get full green signal. Problem I have are the trees. I basically live in a forest of Evergreen trees and when it gets really windy there are hiccups in the reception. Im not sure why the Tablo can’t ride through them hiccups without crashing if that is the case. Never had that issue with the amazon recast. Not once.

From your message it looks like it’s a known issue. If thats the case, I will return it for a refund. I’m going to wait and see until I have to return it the end of January.

The Tablo does have a built in amplifier, if that is on it can conflict with your antenna tuner. Check to see if it is on in Tablos Settings. Also splitter and cable could be an issue.

Thanks, I already turned off amplification a few days ago and still got the crash since then. As far as the splitter goes, I’ve reversed the cables and still got the problem. I am not taking the splitter out. Keep in mind, this is the same setup my recast had and it didn’t have a problem. If by chance the splitter would make a difference by taking it out, I’d sooner send the Tablo back.

I don’t think I’m going to get a solution to this. I have a ticket open but it seems like they don’t answer questions and ask the same questions of me for example asking what device I’m using. Clearly in my orginal ticket I write I’m using a Roku. I’m going to give it one more week of this nonsense then I’m returning it to the seller.

I have the same problem. I was eventually able to overcome it by brute force - Televes Dinova antenna with built-in amplifier and power supply, pointing out a window at the local towers, and the Tablo amplifier switched on. The only very strong channel I have is at 90 degrees to the antenna direction, at its lowest reception gain, so no overload. I know this won’t work for many people but you have to persevere and sometimes think out of the box. I’ve found the Tablo green dots are a pretty worthless measure of reception reliability.

Thanks for the reply.
Just to be clear, you were experiencing the same lockups during playback when getting reception issues? If so, that pretty much confirms it’s a known issue and Tablo is unwilling to admit it.

There are many different versions of Roku, each with their own idiosyncrasies. Maybe they’d like to know the Roku model number, if you haven’t yet provided it.

Sorry if that was confusing. No, I have a long history with reception issues at my location and was speaking to that. Fix any reception issues first and move on from there. I’m using the FireTV app, not the Roku, so I can’t comment if its a Roku issue or a Tablo issue

Update to .56 didnt help. Now I’ve tried it on my fire stick. It did not cause the firestick to reboot but did restart the Tablo app and corrupted the file. Took a couple hours into a football game but did crash due to a momentary loss of reception. I’m going back to using my recast. Good luck to you all.
