On Tuesday we had a significant Internet outage of 10+ hours. Our Tablo simply didn’t work when accessed using our Roku Streaming Stick 4K (3820), with the Roku basically saying that with no internet access it won’t work with no obvious work-around.
Not only does that go against what I thought would happen (with a network based device on the same wifi network) but every other device I tried to access our Tablo from worked fine (Google Chromecast with Google TV, Pixel phone, Pixel Tablet and an iPhone). The Chromecast flagged the lack of Internet connectivity to the outside as expected but it otherwise was able to access our Tablo without issue - playback and recordings went ahead as scheduled and as I’d expect.
What I don’t understand is why the Roku stick simply refused to work. Can anyone suggest why this is happened?
Same happened to me the other day but I was able to hit “dismiss” to the internet message and use my Roku Ultra just fine with my legacy Tablo.
I’d be surprised if different Roku models have differently, but I guess that’s possible.
Roku’s should never be powered by a TV’s USB port. Those are usually limited to 500ma (0.5A), but Roku’s need more, which is why they come with 1A supplies.
Nothing wrong with it, though I see Roku do recommend using mains power where possible. tbh though that feels like a data grab when idle which I’m not a big fan of.
In any case it doesn’t matter as my TV does have a USB socket that supplies 1A, specifically for 2.5" HDD use. My Roku was plugged into that socket.
Either way it’s worked fine since when I’ve simulated Internet loss by disconnecting our modem so I’m happy this is resolved.
