Tablo Gen 4 recording: new vs. all

How does Tablo determine if a scheduled recording is new?

Based on what I’ve seen, there isn’t a consistent categorization of “new”, leading me to select “all” to be sure the program is recorded.

Thank you.

good question and I’m looking forward to the definitive answer :slightly_smiling_face:

Define what “new” means to you. “new” is part of the guide meta-data for each episode.

New to me means its first ever airing. A new episode never shown before. Different channels could be airing it at the same time or slightly different times/days. They all should show as new. If a different channel shows it months or years later for the first time on their channel, it is not new.

“new” is just a meta-data tag that broadcasters include when they release the programming schedule.

SNL and NBC are especially bad at abusing “new”. On legacy if you look at the SNL show for April 26th you might discover that it’s marked as “new” when it first aired january 25, 2025.

And I live on the west coast. SNL is broadcast twice. One 8:30PM - 10PM. It’s marked as both “live” and “new”. It’s then rebroadcast at 11:30Pm - 1AM. It is also marked as "live: and “new”.

Thanks to all for their response. Since it is left to the discretion of the station to set the “new” metadata flag, it really can’t be relied on. As mentioned, I’ve seen the program incorrectly flagged frequently, I guess I’ll keep “all” as the filter.

my exp as best I can recall:

Most of the time it works for me to set to record all, then turn on don’t record duplicates in the settings.

There can be problems with some shows that are shown on two diff stations for example the main pbs station 13.1 for the “premiere”, and the subchannel 13.2 for the repeats, and there can be many. Shows like Cook’s Country. IIRC my tablo sometimes will record all of the shows of this nature…

There are some shows where the episode numbers and descriptions don’t always match up with what gets broadcast and recorded. This again seems to be worst if the same shows are broadcast at different times on different subchannels.

I have a couple of old tv series that i am archiving. Only shown on one channel, although they do repeat the shows AM and Pm. But no problems with dupes.

And yeah one of the most annoying tablo bugs, for me, is how i can set a recording to be limited to one channel, and then infind when i check back aat a later date that the setting has changed
itself to a different channel or to ‘all’.

Also how i can set up some recordings and the ltlle record icon won’t show up, i have to check the status by opening the guide entry for the show and see if i have the option of ‘don’t record episode’—that’s the only way i can confirm thatbtablo will in fact record that show.

Thanks for the guidance.

Don’t record duplicates SHOULD solve the problem. Unfortunately, it has never worked properly on Gen 4 devices.

While it isn’t uncommon for something marked “new” isn’t new, have you ever seen something not marked “new” that actually was new?

Hello,

Sorry you’re running into that.

Would you clarify the issue for us? Are duplicates recorded if pieces of the original are missing? Are there any other patterns you can see?

Using Blue Bloods as an example. It shows on several OTA as well as Ion channels. If I have any channel selected, it will record even if Season/Episode is already in the library.

I have taken to recording Ion only for recording schedule. Even with just the one channel it records everything. As a result I have to go into Upcoming recordings to order do not record as Ion plays so many episodes that they repeat frequently. This is especially annoying as I never experienced this with the Legacy unit.

This has been a problem with Gen 4 since day one and has been a subject in this forum frequently.

Yes for legacy I have seen pre-recorded gymnastics and ice skating shown for the first time not marked as “new”.

Good to know it has happened.
