Many of the consumer style USB drives that are available have the ability to spin down during periods of inactivity. If the Tablo activated this, at least when not recording, playing back, doing housekeeping, or even having a client connected, it would likely lengthen the life of this class of hard drive. The spin up time would likely be unnoticed under most circumstances, since there is a lot of other things going on when connecting and then selecting a video for playback.

That’s why it takes a few seconds longer to tune in the 1st untuned channel, if you haven’t used the Tablo in a while.
