Small issue with Onn Streaming TV Box (2021) after upgrading from Android TV 12 to Android TV 14

To all of you with one of the Onn Streaming TV Boxes or sticks, particularly the 1st gen ones from 2021-22, I wanted to report an issue I had when I upgraded to the newly released Android TV 14 from 12.

After upgrading, I couldn’t get my remote to re-pair to the “puck”. No matter what I tried, it is as if the Bluetooth decided to go fatal. I even performed a factory reset, but to no avail.

I threw a Hail Mary pass by pulling the batteries from the remote (yes, I put new batteries in it) and unplugging the puck and leaving them that way overnight. When I got up this morning, I reconnected everything and tried to pair again. This time, it worked right away.

If you encounter this issue, start with removing the batteries and unplugging and wait several hours. That could save you from having to do a factory reset needlessly. I’m not totally sure why that worked, but am glad it did.

And be wary of that update beyond the remote issue. I tried the update on the $19.88 4K box. It is bricked. It will not go past the Google TV logo. Trying a factory reset just gives a bunch of errors about missing files. An Onn Pro updated OK.

Yikes that brings back memories of when the Nexus players were bricked. I lost 3 of them.

I would personally advise anyone about to install the update to power cycle your Onn device FIRST and maybe even pull the batteries once you complete the upgrade process and put them back once it’s time to pair. It’s no guarantee but might help bring the odds ever in your favor.

This has nothing to do with the remote. It’s the box itself that is bricked.

As cheap as these things are why don’t you just go buy the new 4K Plus I have one and it works great and it already has 14 on it

I had a Gen1 Fire TV 4K Max I wasn’t using, so switched to that instead on the one TV.
