Sinclair now owns 8% of Scripps (owner of Tablo), and is in talks to acquire Scripps via a merger.

We may see a Gen 3 Tablo Pro Max maybe after the merge?

Get ready to pay a monthly fee to watch OTA TV!

I assure you that will never happen. I will go back to watching radio before I pay for TV.

British: What’s this free TV you talk of? (and) You watched radio?

Yes I watched radio. The toaster had burned out.

Actually it’s a fact… I’m that old. Almost.

Those TV toasters can be a bit pricey.

If only it was ATSC 3.0 compatible…

But it is. First toaster that makes perfect toast that you cannot eat (DRM).

I can imagine the ā€œTablo divisionā€ being one of the first things ā€œto goā€. But, we’ll see.

I would not expect all the ā€œkum ba yahā€ statements from Sinclair about ā€œkeeping stuffā€ to be honored at all. IMHO, nukes will drop. The only winners will be those that have a thing for craters.

Of course, none of this ā€œhas happenedā€ā€¦ may never happen.

Originally sinclair wanted to partner with an Indian company to manufacture an ATSC 3.0 dongle. They were a founding member of pearl tv. They also demonstrated ATSC 3.0 ā€œBESTā€ (Broadcast-Enabled Streaming Television) channels at CES a few years ago.

They are basically getting nuvyyo for free as part of the deal. So it should be telling what they do with it.

Uh, the Nuvyyo as we knew it died the moment Scripps displaced their engineering and tech with their own self designed (supposedly competing) DVR. They pooped on the heads of Canada and what was known as Nuvyyo. Do they have interest in Scripps DVR? Maybe, but IMHO, only to kill it. We’ll see. Again, may never happen. Remember Scripps punched back at the ā€œrumorā€ initially. While they have increased their interest in Scripps, I don’t think it’s quite enough for a semi-hostile acquisition… not yet. But, up to the shareholders and board I suppose. IMHO, broadcaster’s are very unpredictable people. But tend to lean towards screwing the consumer whenever possible. So, whatever is despised most by the consumer, that’s likely what will happen

So are you saying that sinclair is giving up on ATSC 3.0 even though they just, via NAB, petitioned the FCC to allow the termination of the sunset rule. Patent trolls have jacked up the cost of ATSC 3.0 included in TV’s. Resulting in LG leaving the market and others only including(enabling) ATSC 3.0 in high end TV’s.

And SEC rules prevent companies to commenting on ongoing merger talks. This prevents wall street from gaming both companies stock.

What? No. Just DRM limited, restricted, controlled ATSC 3.0. DVRs as we know them, not really welcome. That is, no ā€œkeep my recordingā€, at best, you get to ā€œsee itā€ as long as they want you to and that could end at any moment in time. Zero chance of remote viewing, and zero chance of accessing for ā€œoutsideā€ of their controlled use. That is, even the 4th Gen, which is bad, even if it went ATSC 3.0, cannot be allowed, because there is, while bad, some accessibility ā€œoutsideā€ and that will have to be ended. That is, the ā€œin houseā€ one device only style of future ATSC 3.0 DVR, is just the tip, it’s actually much much worse than that. While I don’t always agree with Lon.tv, he’s starting to see the big (bad) picture.

IMHO, today’s Tablo is horrible. But even that has to be destroyed. Broadcaster’s hate anyone’s ability to record and actually use their content (emphasis on hate). They will masquerade a level of highly controlled access and monetize as much as possible. It will be ultra-controlled and very very very very restricted. It’s their goal. Always has been their goal.

Under the broadcaster’s forced redefinition of the English language, where ā€œbroadcastā€ was redefined to include ā€œtranscodingā€ and thus all transcoded OTA material requires a rebroadcast license (which in turn means big fees somehow)… but truth is, it’s a private club, and they aren’t going to hand out that licensing to anyone (no matter what you’re willing to pay, and it’s extreme folks… but now it’s infinite effectively). This is ultimately why OG Tablo is no longer available for sale IMHO (I still think they’ll figure out a way of completely obliterating existing OG owners usage, but we’ll see… I think there’s some ā€œstealthā€ so as to not reveal their true hand at this time, but they hold all the trump cards).

I’ve been harping on this for about 10 years and just now people like Antenna Man and Lon are starting to see… It’s time to take off the ā€œbroafcaster’s are our friendsā€ blinders.

The whole ATSC 3.0 NextgenTV debacle is fully of their own doing. So, why? Well, if you watched the above video, then you know the billions of dollars of debt to make local affiliates ATSC 3 ready (sold them a lie effectively) could be offset by big gift money of acquisition and consolidation. This wreaks-o.

Could it be that the tablo legacy is no longer made because the maxlinear tuners and pixelworks CPUs are no longer made. And at over 8 years old these chips are obsolete.

My local ATSC 3.0 stations don’t have DRM enabled and my STB’s support AC-4 and my TV supports H.265 so I’m not sure what transcoding you are talking about.

That’s like saying we’re ditching Windows because the Pentium 90 is no longer available.

Could it be that tablo used the software stack and API’s that were part of pixelworks. And since these were no longer available had to be re-implemented.
