Screen goes black on Roku during ADs after 7PM

Okay, this isn’t my imagination, it’s been happening for a couple of weeks. After 7PM when an commercial starts the screen blanks for a second or two. This happens at least once per ad, sometimes more. Next commercial same thing. Regular program is perfect. This only happens on Roku. Once or twice Tablo app stops and I get an error message from the Roku that reads HDMI 2.2 compatibility problems. Happens no matter what HDMI port is used on multiple TVs or AV receiver. Again, it’s just the commercials not the programming and just after 7PM. Firestick no problem. Any ideas?

What model Roku do you have? It sounds like it might be a sync issue caused by the HDMI cable or Roku. Can you adjust the resolution on the Roku?

It’s just the Commercials. No other app or device has a problem. Had this Roku Streaming Stick 4K+ for 2 years with no HDMI problems. It’s only the Tablo app. It’s only the commercials on live TV. And it only happens after about 7PM. No kidding

Some would consider it a blessing to have a blank screen instead of commercials.

HDMI 2.2 officially revealed at CES 2025:

HDMI 2.2 was officially released by the HDMI Forum on June 25, 2025, making it approximately 2 months old

I understand what you’re saying, but there could be video sync signal changes or issues caused when switching between live or recorded TV and commercials due to different video resolutions. Just a guess though.

Are you saying that this specific Roku device and your Tablo worked without any such issues in the past?

EDIT: we seldon use our old Samsung TV and latest Roku Ultra but i did use it tonight to watch the VMA’s. I noticed the same as you - where the screen blanks when the recording goes from show to commercials.

I also noticed that the screen goes from 1920x1080 @60Hz to 1920x1080 @24Hz, thus creating a sync issue.

Seems like it’s the Roku and maybe the older TV (mainly the older TV) not sync’ing. The older TV has HDMI 1.3 and max’es out at 1080p.

I changed the Roku from 1080p to 720p and it appears to have resolved this issue (and the picture still looks great).

If the roku is set to 1080p you have to know if the original show was broadcast as 1080i which is deinterlacing to 1080p. Or the original the original show was 720p which is upscaling to 1080p

That is odd.

Does this happen with over-the-air channels, online streaming channels or both?

Just LIVE OTA channels. Doesn’t happen with replay. OTA broadcasts are NOT switching resolution–ever. Just LIVE OTA broadcasts, just commercials, just after about 7PM. My knee jerk reaction is it’s some kind of data gathering either by Roku or Tablo. Shrug…

This is just the Roku. Switching to Firestick there’s no problem. Maybe something in the last Roku update. Next time the HDMI error occurs I’ll put it here for everyone’s amusement. Could be the Roku hardware going bad. Again, shrug…

Yes both, but just on the Roku - it happened on the VMA’s OTA recording for me. And it also happens when viewing some live OTA.

My old UN55C6500 Samsung TV we bought in 2009 or 2010 shows the resolution and sync rate when it switches. So, it goes from 60Hz to 24Hz - probably auto-switching in the TV. Once I set the Roku to 720p the problem seemed to disappear.

It’d be swell if @TabloTV would include some recording metadata somewhere.

Edit: sorry, we don’t use streaming channels. It happens with both live OTA and recorded OTA only.

Looks like our CBS affiliate broadcasts 1080i. I’m watching the VMA’s recording now on the Fire Stick 4k Max and, as @p101 says, it doesn’t exhibit the problem. Only the latest Roku combined with my older TV.

Also, it’s not the TV show, per se. It seems like it’s the broadcast switching from one resolution or sync rate to another when displaying TV show or commercial.

Hmmm. So, I guess Roku just rolled out HDMI 2.2 support in their last update?
