Roku sees my Tablo, won't play anything

@PiX64 Thanks for your comments.

Explain to me why my Roku won’t work, but my Chromecast works just fine if you believe there is an issue with my wireless network signal?  The Roku and Chromecast sit approx. 2 feet from each other at the TV location, and the Tablo device sees the network just fine.

It’s not physically possible (well, without a LOT of cable) to get the TabloTV connected to both my roof mounted OTA antenna and my router.

I wasn’t having an issue with TabloTV streaming to my TV with any other device other than my Roku.  Also, my Web app issues are related to the Tablo not showing all of the recordings, nothing to do with lack of signal.

@TabloSupport, I’ll have to send a message when I’m home for more than 1 night at a time.  I purchased this device to be able to record my OTA broadcasts for remote viewing, so working on connections at the house has been second priority.

@Rich -

Is the chromecast connection to the wireless Tablo solid?  meaning you have no playback issues or anything via the chromecast?

As far as explaining why one would work and not the other, I can’t.  I would simply suggest connecting your tablo directly to the router (via powerline adapters if necessary). Others have been suggested to do this and had success.  Then see if your wireless issues with the Roku go away.

I can tell you that I have 3 Roku 2 XS in various spots throughout the house (mostly using Roku 3s at this point) and the wired ones are A-OK.  the wireless ones struggle a bit to keep up even though the wifi coverage in my house both 2.4Ghx\z and 5Ghz signal is reported to be excellent via android app wifi analyzer.  Despite sturggling, they are usable, not ideal, but usable.  My tablo is connected directly to my switch.

sorry you are having issues … that sux, and hopefully we, mainly @TabloSupport, can get you squared away.

Did you ever resolve this issue? Seeing the same problem on a brand new Roku 2. My few years old 2XD works great but brand new one out of the box won’t work with HDMI or composite.

My XD, even if trying to watch “Live TV” (other things work sporadically on any device), it just goes back to the menu of shows/channels when I try to watch anything.  Roku XD running with latest updates… without issues for anything else.

@cjcox Try a factory reset on the Roku.  That seems to clear this issue for most people.

@jbanks25 thanks… turns out I needed to RMA my Tablo… hoping my new Tablo works out better.

I am having this exact problem. I’ve factory reset my Roku and power cycled my Tablo but even after all this setup, the TabloTV channel displays my recordings but does not play them when selected (I see a brief video player flash and then it returns me to the show description)

Is there any fix that I missed?

For reference I have a Roku2 connecting to my WiFi network. My Tablo is connected via Ethernet

The last update screwed something up.

@fousheezy @TJANDJJ We’re in the process of diving deeper into Roku now. From what we can tell, some users are getting varying results on the same setup. The problem we’re having is that we’ve been unable to reproduce it here to see what exactly is going on. We’re in the process of contacting Roku for some insight. Improvements to come.

I also have this issue on my Roku 2.  Factory reset was not helpful. My Roku3 - works like a charm. I’d like to not need to replace my roku2 as Tablo said it was supported.  This is disappointing.

I gave up on the idea of Tablo fixing the Roku2 issues, and bought a Roku 3.  I then moved the Roku2 to a different tv with lower resolution (720) and discovered the Tablo and Roku 2 worked find together with the 720 resolution display setting.  I think Tablo’s issue might be connected to the resolution decisions the Roku 2 makes - in my case I was trying to output to 16:9.  It’s a hunch, but I think that might be the issue and I wanted to post that I did find this as one solution or idea for others to try (although I agree downgrading resolution is not desirable).

I have a solid solution to this problem.  Tablo won’t work on a Roku 2 if you initiate or factory reset the device while connected to the composite outputs.  Use HDMI to set it up.  After it is set up, then go to Settings -> Display.    If you see four options then you are in the chips.  Select 720 or 1080.   Don’t choose 4X3 or 16X9 (I think this will set the Roku2 to 480p, which Tablo doesn’t like).  Remove power from the Roku2, disconnect the HDMI and then reconnect the composite output.  It should work just fine.

I have a whole-house system that distributes 480 to a bunch of TVs.  I will be in trouble if Roku discontinues the model 2.  Guess I should purchase a spare.

That’s it. Thanks DanB. I have been working with Tablo Support for months without resolution. After following your advice I am now able to play Tablo using composite cable on my old 480 large screen TV. By the way, I use Roku LT for this old TV. My other Roku connects by HDMI and never had this issue. Thank you so much for your posting.

@TabloSupport…please make note of this “fix” and enter into your knowledge base.

I just got my Tablo and was getting frustrated because I had the exact same problem on my Roku 2. But DanB’s solution worked like a charm! Thank you, DanB.

I didn’t have to factor reset. Unplugging the Roku and following those steps worked just fine. It seems really weird that that would do the trick, but whatever.

I would use the HDMI cable for my Roku but it stopped working sometime after the warranty expired. I can see the Roku menus, channels, and games, but as soon as I try to play video, the screen turns purple and I can only hear sound. I assume it has something to do with copyright protection on HDMI. (Searching Google seems to confirm that copyright protection is used on HDMI but not for composite.)

Anyway, thanks again!
