I need to be able to start watching a DVR recording before it ends. After finding out that my Apple Tv won’t allow me to do this, I was advised on this board that I should buy the Roku Express 4k, as I want to spend the least amount of money, because I have no other use for the Roku. I have been seeing conflicting info concerning headphones. Could anyone with the Roku Express 4k tell me if I will be able to use headphones to watch it through my TV?. Not interested in watching it on my iPhone.
I have five or six Roku of varying vintage. I do have at least one Express 4k. All my Roku work just fine, even the older ones, but you may have to turn on Audio Compatibility Mode in the settings. You will know if you try to connect to your OTA channels and it kicks you back to the guide.
I can’t say much about the headphone feature. Are you connecting the headphones to the TV, or are you trying to make use of the ‘headphone via remote control’ feature, where you plug headphones into the Roku remote? I’m not sure that feature is available on the Express 4k, so check before you buy. The only unit I have that I know for sure has that feature is my Ultra, but they could have added it to the 4k.
I had never tried this feature, because I had no use for it, but out of curiosity I tried it just now. While watching Daytona on my Tablo, I plugged earbuds into the Roku remote control. It automatically muted the audio on the TV and I could clearly hear the audio through the earbuds. Kinda neat… I still don’t need it.
I want to play back my DVR recording and watch thru the TV. I have Bluetooth headphones, Apple earbuds, and Sony wireless headphones. Surely, I can use one of those???
The Roku itself is not Bluetooth capable as fast as I know, but if you can connect to your TV via Bluetooth I would expect that it would work just fine.
When you used headphone previously, did they connect to the TV or the Apple streaming device?
My bluetooth listening devices are connected to Apple TV. My TV itself is not bluetooth capable.
I keep seeing something about using my smart phone to do this, but don’t understand how I can have a Roku app open on my phone and a Tablo app open on my Roku Express and somehow listen with my bluetooth headphones???
If you install the Roku app on your phone or tablet, you can use the physical audio jack or Bluetooth on your phone to listen to the audio from the Roku device. This setup uses your WiFi to connect between the Roku device and the phone. The only downside of this is the audio might not be in sync with the video. An Amazon fire stick can connect directly to a Bluetooth headphone. There’s even an adjustment on the stick to sync the audio with the video.
