When I watch recordings from the tv connected to the Tablo the show is automatically marked as watched. But when I watch remotely from my phone, I have to manually mark them.
No such thing. What client are you using to watch on the TV? And what phone app?
Ok, the tv connected directly to my home WiFi, to which the tablo is hard wired. 
Apple. For both.
And vice versa in my case.
