I’ve owned this 4 tuner gen 4 Tablo since December. I could live with the quirks (a lot of them), but what I just found tonight is VERY upsetting.
I’ve been watching streaming lately, and letting my Tablo recorded shows accumulate. That was a mistake! I went to watch Tracker, and while the 6 episodes are all labled correctly, 5 of them are actually 60 Minutes episodes. Then I switched over to The Rookie, and the episode was actually Will Trent! What is happening here? I wonder what the Will Trent episodes I have recorded might really be? I shut it off before I nearly decided to throw it in the garbage. I still might.
I don’t know what the problem is, but Tablo certainly can’t seem to handle managing this device. What a shame. I will be moving on from this device, and I will make certain everyone knows what I think of it. 100% garbage!
Since these TV shows are right behind or before the ones desired it would seem that you could verify what is in both the Live TV grid and the actual guide.
Those shows (tracker, in particular) were delayed by sporting events and aired late. I’m some cases, significantly late, which is why the shows were missed. A time slot was recorded rather than the program.
Sorry this happened to you, but ya, I see this as a lingering problem that might need some attention by the Tablo team.
One thing that we’ve learned to do over 10 years - because 60 Minutes almost never records at its correct time - is we set its recording as scheduled but then add an hour or so to it in order to catch the whole show when a sporting event (I’m talking about you, GOLF!) runs long.
I think we all understand the frustration, but it’s not so bad if you can proactively manage the schedule.
I have had this same problem… couple episodes of Watson (same channel as Tracker)… I got Tracker instead, probably the same days you missed Tracker. Though I haven’t researched it, I assumed it was due to a long running sporting event or such. It would be nice if there was some way for Tablo to be aware / correct for this, but I am not sure that’s possible.
How does Tablo know when a sporting event goes too long? I can’t fathom they can do this without constructing some heavy duty AI server that can adjust this on the fly. Which Comcast doesn’t even do.
I don’t know. Unless it states somewhere that it can’t be done, then there may be a way to do it. Here are some good articles to help get users around live or extended programs that run long into scheduled programming. Users need to anticipate this when they set up their recording schedules, e.g. we always set the 60 Minutes series to record 1 hour longer than scheduled.
I have never seen a DVR are that could adjust for last minute scheduling changes due to live events. Yes CBS is notorious for this. I have all of my CBS shows programmed to add an extra hour. I did the exact same thing when I was with DirecTV.
It would be nice if Tablo could adjust for this, but they are not the only ones. This is not Tablo’s fault.
There might be something in what I call the control data stream that could signal the end of an event. It could work the same as the commercial skip.
There are data patterns embedded in the data stream that mark the beginning and end of commercials. Different data patterns can be embedded in the data stream to mark the beginning and end of any event. The receiver just needs to detect the patterns and act accordingly. A dvr can keep recording an event until it receives the end of event pattern.
ATSC3 allows a huge amount of control data to reside in multiple data streams.
If you think about it, do you think the media companies want to make it EASY for you to record shows on your own??? They want you to PAY for one of their services, where you can watch it next-day.
If there were something embedded in the transmission stream that signaled the start and end of a commercial tablo wouldn’t need to use DSP and ML in the cloud to process commercial skip.
I record several of the Fox animated shows Sunday evening. After getting sick of missing shows because football ran late I simply setup a manual recorded time from 7pm until 10pm CST so I could FF through it to find my shows. Oh yeah that’s right you can’t manual record with the 4th gen. If I didn’t have my 1st gen Tablo to do it I suppose I could set up the 4th gen to record all the Fox programming from 7 'til 10. Then pick through them to find the shows I want to watch. We don’t keep any recordings for more than a week or two on the 4th gen.
