NVIDIA Shield into a SONY Bravia. I also have a ROKU TV but have not tried to view with that. The thing that is bothersome is the segmented or incomplete recordings, which has nothing to do with my viewing hardware. I drew a conclusion about what I was seeing live vs the recordings, but I cannot prove it.

I am recording off the ION channels and IFC and rarely get a good, full recording.
What are you seeing versus the recordings? What conclusion did you come to?
And some Roku sticks seem to buffer, that’s why I asked.
Try any of the ION channels, but the recording glitches occur with all of the viewing devices inactive. So why wouldn’t this be a purely Tablo issue since the recording problem is with FAST channels and not OTA channels?
When I look at a recording that is in 2 or 3 segments, I so no indication of anything at the end of a segment. It just stops recording prematurely. The beginning of the next segment also indicates nothing special. Sometimes the whole recording just ends prematurely…incomplete. I just happen to notice when watching the FAST channels I watch live that sometimes I see what I am calling buffering. I have never tried to correlate that to an ongoing recording. Just another assumption on my part. I suppose I could record and watch simultaneously, keep a log of the time I see a glitch live, then compare it with the segments. But I have not done that.
I too don’t see any rhyme or reason for the breaks in recording. I’ve also had some recordings showing as an hour in the guide coming up with a lot less that that. Anything from just over a minute to roughly 47 minutes. The only stable recordings are from OTA stations.
If you get a BS answer from support like that, if true, tablo has a lot more serious internal problems then external problems. Support should be able to remote connect into your unit, there should be a wrap around log that contains information about when each recording started and ended and why it ended.
If logs like this weren’t implemented God help us.
If you thought logs were the answer…
Not a word since.
Although, we just put it back in support mode again yesterday (for a different reason), so let’s see how worse things got?
Properly implemented logging provides 80%-90% of the information needed to start the debug process.
I agree… but those logs can be a mile long and can take a while to decipher it.
Logs are more for developers then support. There are “developers” who can design and not implement. There are developers that can implement but not debug - even their own code. There are only a few who excel at all three. It should only take 4-5 hours grinding the logs your own product made. It’s more a way of thinking.
Now a recording on Dove which was supposed to be one hour ended after 38 minutes and 48 seconds. This is not the first occurrence. I submitted a support request.
I am appalled at the “head in the sand” attitude of Tablo about this problem. I do not pretend to know the intricacies of this technology but I have tried a number of things to understand what I can do and not do with my Tablo. It seems clear that this should be something they can fix. I have never had an OTA recording break into segments or terminate before set time. However, I have rarely had a FAST recording completely record as selected. True, occasionally I get a full FAST recording but I have given up trusting the Tablo for that. I am using Prime and Paramount+ for more on-demand streaming than I ever did, now. The Tablo is such an elegant concept for cord-cutters, why can’t they make it work as intended? If what I am seeing real time is indeed buffering, explain to me why it is only on FAST channels and it does not occur on any other streaming service I use???

LarrySB,
well said! I agree with you completely and really would like to see this device work as intended but if I hold my breath any longer waiting for Tablo to make fixes I’m afraid I will be eating dirt.
I recorded 3 programs last night. IFC, Dove, and ION Fast.
This was overnight last night. No segmenting.
I’ve never had a problem with Dove or ION. In fact, I use the FAST ion instead of my local because it’s higher quality.
As to IFC, splits have happened but they are rare.
I would be interested to see what your results are for a few, sporadic recordings on Maximum Effort over the weekend.
I will try maximum effort tonight. I meant using the ION Fast Channel not the OTA channel.
Yes, I was recording ION FAST, ION Plus FAST and ION Mystery FAST. I can get two of those OTA but I watch the FAST channels live because the resolution is better. I have only tried to record FAST. My OTA recordings are typically CBS, NBC, PBS and FOX. I can record a whole Brokenwood Mystery on PBS OTA with no problem. But when I try it on a FAST channel…well you know the answer.

The main difference I have, that I know of… that I have a 3.5 HDD usb adapter with it’s own power supply.
I wonder if the drive is pulling too much power and borking? Versus my setup has it’s own power supply. Just a theory!
I can’t even begin to say how long this has been an issue.
The more I look at the different FAST stations people are having a problem with, the more I wonder if it’s a matter of distance from servers or whatever. The FAST stations have to come in from their own server before even getting to the Tablo – do we have any idea if it goes through another one before it gets to us?
Point is… FAST that doesn’t work for some will work for others, and FAST that will work for others might not work for someone else. It’s a nightmare and it doesn’t seem like Tablo gives a crap about fixing this issue. Hell, they won’t even take the time to fix the data guide on these stations. Or fix some of them for the daylight savings we went through weeks back!
