Question on ATSC 3.0

I keep reading posts about ATSC 3.0 being far more efficient for cord cutters who stream. No need for transcoding etc.

I really don’t understand what it is and what it means for someone who uses a Tablo. Can someone explain? Once ATSC 3.0 is fully implemented would it mean it would automatically work with a Tablo I bought today? Or would it be updated with firmware? or would I be forced to purchase updated hardware?

@SJMaye Literally working on a blog post about this right now!

I’ll post the link when it’s up

The TL:DR is that ATSC 3.0 is still a long ways out (like 2020 at least) but it will require new hardware.

Or even more to the point, new tuners (that includes that shiny 100" OLED 8K TV you mortgaged your house to get).

Exactly what I needed to know. So, if I purchase a Tablo I am at least OK until 2020. Thank you.
