There are times when I stop a recording in-process and wish to replay when the thumbnails are available. It would be nice to have a visual indication of this without having to repeatedly start the replay. I use them extensively to, for example, jump through a basketball game to skip not only adds but also non-action events such as call challanges and free throws. If the event is in-progress, I will stop a recording and restart to provide this capability up to this point in the program. I also stop news programming as I’m only interested in the headline topics.
The thumbnails are generated within two or three minutes of the completion of the recording.

When using the on-board memory, the program must first be transcoded to mpeg-4, adding additional time for thumbnail generation. I’ve empirically determined this to be something like 5 minutes for an hour program. If there are programs being recorded at the same time, this seems to slow the process.
Interesting. Is this on a Gen4? In my experience, it seems to go a little faster. I know that when I watch the evening news, and start watching a little late, once the program has completed, I can almost immediately exit the live viewing, and launch the recording so I have thumbnails for the remainder of the show.
Yes, Gen4. What I’ll do is start viewing immediately until the first ad, then restart the playback to get the thumbnails (which are done by then). With a news program, I’ll use the thumbnails to scan for topics of interest, so it would be nice to start with them. Also, I’m transitioning from Legacy to Gen4 and appreciate the larger thumbnails 
I wish it would generate thumbnails on the fly, but I can understand how that would be challenging, and resource intensive.
For a $100 box, I am not complaining.
Note I’m not asking for thumbnails on the fly, just an indication of when they are completed, such as something added (or removed) in the corner of the episode selection box.
I understood. I was building on your idea. I can see the convenience of the feature you are requesting.
A thought: There is a “REC” label in the selection box when being recorded. This label could be updated to something like “processing” and then removed when completed.
