Port Forwarding, Tablo Connect

As an FYI, to get the tablo app to recognize that port forwarding was working I had to disable remote access then enable it. This is in the settings page under Tablo Connect.

I kept thinking it was the modem/router/gateway and spent a few hours with Xfinity tech support. I gave up. Then I decided to try to disable it and re-enable it.

I also had to setup UPnP for port forwarding in the gateway’s web page.
I also had to setup the device’s port forwarding in the Xfinity’s app using the private port numbers and the TCP protocol as shown on the Tablo app. The Xfinity app did NOT have manual configuration for port forwarding nor did the web page.

Yes, I had to mess with 2 gateway configuration programs: its web page and the app. Thank you Xfinity.

I had hours and hours of frustration due to the Tablo App NOT automatically refreshing when testing. Nor any sort of app help link icon on this indicating that the enable/disable should be done.

This was for:
a legacy Tablo,
A Xfinity XB8-T gateway, and
wired Tablo to gateway

Additionally, the gateway is using “Advanced Security” set to medium.

I retried Tablo remote access a few days ago and it did not work again.
I tried this and did NOT get frustrated. It worked.

  1. In Tablo App settings, disabled remote access. Waited a few minutes to make sure the setting was processed by the Tablo device. (In reality this was disabled a few days ago.)
  2. Logged into the gateway/router web page not the Xfinity app. Went to “Advanced” then to “Device Discovery”. Clicked on UPnP: “Enabled”. Clicked on 'Save". Then waited a few minutes To make sure the router had the setting and sent out the port advertisement.
  3. In the Tablo app settings, under “Tablo Connect”, Clicked on “Remote Access”. The Tablo app indicated that “Your Tablo is ready for remote access”

I verified on my phone that Tablo remote access was working. I disabled the home wifi on the phone to do this.

I had read that the Xfinity gateway router disables this after 30 days.

Did you recently acquire this legacy device?..or have you had it for a while? So, in the end you got the Tablo Connect working?

I’ve had the device for more than 5 years.

I did get it working.

More context…

With my previous modem, I’ve used Tablo remote connect for about 5 years without major issues.
I switched to a new gateway/modem because the previous one failed after 5 years of use.
With the previous one I did manual port forwarding easily ( spent maybe 2 minutes/change on the very few times it needed attention).
I trusted the port forwarding to the point that I did not check it before I left home.
Now, I check the port forwarding every time before I leave home out of dis-trust.

I think the combination of 1) the gateway only using UPnP and 2) the Tablo App not “refreshing” its forwarded port expectations maybe the problem and cause of frustration.

I “THINK” that the Tablo remote connect “test” is testing that the shown ports are forwarded and not that any ports are. So by disabling the remote connect and re-enabling it, it just checks that any ports are forwarded not just the ones that are shown. Just a theory…

Yes, been there done that. I had this happen to me in the past, probably because I didn’t assign my Tablo a static IP on my internal network. It’s been pretty solid since then. I also pay $5/mo for a static external IP address, so I think that adds to the stability.
