Orbit (Netgear with Satellite) router and remote access

Bridged mode is not possible on the AT&T platform. The reasons for that are:

  • Bridged mode is not compatible with AT&T services, because AT&T requires all gateways to have 802.1x proprietary authentication.
  • AT&T Customer Care has no way to remotely access the modem/gateway device in order to do diagnostics testing.
  • A bridged mode configuration does not allow the device to receive any future firmware updates from AT&T as remote access is disabled with a bridged mode setting.
  • PPPoE is not applicable on the AT&T platform.

If you are trying to enable Bridge mode because you have a third party router that you want to manage your network, or if you have another device that you want to receive a WAN IP address, several configuration options are available. Please visit Configuring Ip Passthrough and DMZ plus for assistance configuring your hardware.

Thanks for the information! I have caught myself, several times this week. I had a firmware update and should start from default settings… but need to save a list of my DHCP Reservations. Not static address!
There is so much misinformation out there!

I’ve got a Tablo dual lite, an Orbi RBR40 and 3 satellites, and an ATT U-verse NVG589 router. My Tablo is plugged in to the RBR40. Everything works great at home, but I would love to get the Remote Access to work as well. I’ve tried my best to figure out this port forwarding stuff, but pc tech is not my strong suit! If anyone could give me some tips or suggestions, I would appreciate it!

Login to your AT&T modem and put it in bridged mode. If based on above posts you cannot put it in bridged mode, in the settings of the AT&T modem you’ll have to DMZ your Orbi router. The reason for doing this is you’re currently engaged in Double NAT. Read below.

Do you only have one Ethernet device connect to the AT&T modem? If yes, then use the DHCPS-dynamic option described below. (When I said Ethernet device I mean is the only device connected to your modem the Orbi router)

Update: Now after a few days the remote access has gone to asking for manual setup. No idea why it worked automatically initially. My old 4-Tuner always required manual so that is what I was expecting.

This is what I did – DMZ’z my Orbi router. Also set the Orbi router to use something in the 192.168.2.x range as suggested, but I don’t think this is actually necessary as I had used 10.0.0.1+ range before with my older Netgear R6700 router without issue and remote access worked great.
