I’ve been passively watching for the past few hours and haven’t seen it yet. It usually takes several hours of watching live before it happens.
I’ve had it happen just channel surfing through FAST. Never had to reboot. I’ve exited the app and back in immediately.
Although I seem to recall it was on GustoTV spinning and spinning. I can’t watch it on Fire 4k. Spins… You got the idea. Then the next channel I selected got the storage error.
Sometimes it complains about offline mode and I wait a few seconds and it resolves.
Both on Fire Stick 4k G2.
Sorry for highjacking the thread.
“I would like a new user setting established that allows the user to disable the “real time” recording”
To OP can’t you use the pop-up screen to cancel? I do.
For me this issue has nothing to do with deliberate recording (eg hitting record while watching or watching a scheduled recording while it’s still recording).
It is related to Tablo “automatically” and “simultaneously” recording whenever you watch live OTA TV. I do nothing to initiate this type of recording. This “feature” enables the ability to “pause live TV” or “rewind live TV”.
When the glitch occurs, the Tablo app gets “stuck in a replay loop” that is very difficult to get out of. The screen switches to a very short replay timeline that repeats the same few seconds over and over.
Sometimes I can get out of it with left arrow to exit the app. Sometimes I can repeatedly hit the right arrow and the app skips past the trouble spot and returns to normal live viewing. Sometimes the left arrow rewinds back to the beginning of the program. Sometimes I have to restart everything (worst case). It’s all very random.
The wife and I have learned to simply use the remote to switch to the TV tuner and watch the rest of the live program that way. Easy since I have coax to all of my TVs as backup to the Tablo. In this mode (antenna direct to the TV tuner), I have never seen anything worse than an occasional signal blip. The TV tuner never gets hung up in a weird repeat loop.
Hi Classic Rocker, (great handle!)
Can you please tell me
- the SID of your Tablo ?
- what is the version of the Tablo firmware?
- does this happen only on some channels or on all channels?
- what client device (and app version) are you using when you see this?
Thank you.
Cheers,
It happens on random OTA TV channels. It is usually triggered by a signal blip. Something that would make my TV tuner flash a pixel or 2, or just flicker slightly. When I am watching live OTA TV on the Tablo app, sometimes these events trip on by just like the TV tuner. However, sometimes they kick the Tablo client app into this repeat loop.
It seems to me the Tablo client is attempting to “recover” the digital TV stream by going to its real time recording, backing up slightly, and then trying to continue the program. Problem is, what ever tripped it up on the live stream is recorded and the decoder then just trips over it again and again. Wash, rinse, repeat.
The “recovery” logic should be to somehow pick up the live data stream “real time” AFTER the signal blip, which probably muffs up the simultaneous recording. Not sure how to handle that. Just continue recording from there as well? Perhaps a better solution would be to not record the “blip” in the first place in the error handling.
In a perfect world the OTA TV signal would be perfect 100% of the time. We don’t live in a perfect world. Seems to me either 1) improve the client’s ability to recover without falling into this “replay loop”, or 2) let the user optionally disable “simultaneous” real time recording at the expense of giving up pause/rewind functionality.
I have app version 2.0.4 on both Google TV and FireTV stick. Everything is up to date. I have a robust OTA TV setup, as well as a robust wired network for all-things Tablo. Internet is 500mbps fiber. There are no bottlenecks in that regard. I firmly believe this is a Tablo client software “feature”.
Let me add, this behavior only happens when watching live OTA TV. My wife records dozens of live OTA TV programs to “binge watch” later. Neither of us have ever seen this “looping” behavior on any recorded live OTA TV program.
As I have said, it is somehow tied to the simultaneous recording going on while actually watching the live OTA TV.
We’ve been watching live all day today, mainly on the local NBC channel, without any issues.
It happened once this evening. Wife was watching “Last Man Standing” on CW. The Tablo app on the Sony Bravia 8 Google TV locked in that same loop. She managed to exit out of the app and then went back in. She went back to finish watching that same program on CW and it was fine.
The Tablo app on that TV has been on quite a bit over the last couple of days (football, etc) and has been fine with only this one incident. That’s about par for how often this occurs.
Over the past several days, we’ve just been seeing 3-4 spinning circles and Failed to Load errors and usually have to exit Tablo and reopen it. This makes it only slightly annoying.
Okie dokie. I was confused. You are talking about the buffering process that takes place while viewing Live to enable pause, time shift or rewind features. Not recording although you could. Like you said. D’oh!
I’ve been having some weather-related reception issues for the last couple of days. First time in months. I’m in NC, where are you?
DFW, TX but we’ve got clear skies lately so it doesn’t seem to be weather-related.
That’s fair. I love pausing live tv.
