I bought my Tablo 4th gen, 4 tuner last summer. I use it with a FireStick 4k, and, I just upgraded to the “Max” version with 16gb to see if that would reduce the buffering that occurs. I also added a 2TB drive, since I kept filling up the on-board memory. What I’m dealing with is buffering often, and my solution so far has been to reset the Firestick to clear it. After reading an older post here, it sounds like the Tablo app doesn’t shutoff if you don’t back out to the home screen before powering off the FireStick and TV, and it ends up getting confused. This shouldn’t be happening with a relatively mature device, like the Tablo. Has anyone discussed with the Tablo Tech support team?
I use an amazon fire TV stick 4k gen1with the tablo gen 4 using internal storage and don’t have a buffering issue. And I’m using WiFi to an ancient N750 router with the fire tv stick using 5 ghz and the gen 4 using 2.4.
Thanks for the reply. Do you back out of the app before shutting down? If I just power off the TV, the next time I power up and go to the Tablo app, it puts me back where I left it, until the buffer empties, then I have to go back and select a new program or channel. During this time is where I get buffering (the blue circle).
I would say yes to always backing out of the Tablo or any streaming app before shutting off device. That way the cache (memory for settings etc.) is cleared and you probably won’t get buffering because the app is trying to catch up to what is now trying to stream. Just like a computer it is always better to start fresh set of instructions. I know it may be a bother but I think you will again find performance is better.
Of course I back out. If you use and OTT product like Sling it continues where you were. And if you turned off the TV while it was paying it seems to continue to play while the TV is off. The same thing happens if you switch HDMI inputs to another STB.
Have you tried viewing on another device? Perhaps your phone?
That might help determine if the trouble is your Tablo or your streaming device.
What router do you have and which band are you using?
Absolutely back completely out to the FireTV home screen before shutting down. If you don’t, you will have issues the next time you go in to the Tablo app. Once that happens, your best bet is to go to the FireTV app settings and clear the Tablo app cache. Alternatively, you can hold the Select and Play buttons down at the same time on the FireTV remote until FireTV restarts.
Yes, this sucks and shouldn’t work this way, but it does. Worst case, you can also power cycle the Tablo itself to clear up “sticky” issues.
Thanks for the info. It seems the problem only occurs with the Fire Stick. I have an older Roku, that works fine, and Tablo plays fine on my Android phone.
I use a Unifi UDR with a Unifi POE switch. The Tablo is hardwired to the switch. I started backing out of Tablo before switching off the TV, but, that’s a pain, and shouldn’t be necessary.
Interesting, usually it’s the Tablo app on the Roku, not the Firestick, that’s having issues! I’m using a 2nd gen 4K max on a couple of systems and having no problems.
Just for the hell of it, have you tried a WiFi connection to the Tablo.
A fire tv stick 4k gen 1 uses android 7.1. A fire tv stick 4K max gen 2 uses android 11.
If that is the case, try deleting the Tablo app from your Firestick and reinstalling it.
It is a known issue with the Tablo app on the FireTV stick, and it will happen on my 4k Max variant every time. Agree that it shouldn’t work that way, but it does. Back out to the home screen before shutting down, or maybe replace the FireTV stick with a Roku. Otherwise, get used to clearing the Tablo app cache.
The 4k max 1 uses Fire OS7 (android 9). The 4kmax gen 2 uses Fire OS8 (android 11).
