New Antenna Technology

The major 3.0 difficulties will be a NEW TV and a NEW Tablo box. Other than that it wil be great. OH YA I just bought a new 65" Samsung for $1800.

pixelation at 7 miles? antenna gain is not necessarily going to help that although DSP might. consider more padding across all frequencies in addition to that LTE filter? maybe try adding a 3db or 6db pad?

hi…I think the last changes that I can recall was all the new antenna technology in the switch from SD to HD. You needed to get a new antenna for all those HD channels stations were switching to. Then lately with all the cord cutters I’ve seen product packaging that indicated that the antenna was best for 1080P and Free OTA Channels. I even saw one that said it was capable of up to 55 color channels. Amazing times we live in these days.

Amazing (lying) times. Not sure if you were being sarcastic, but in case you weren’t … the concept of a “digital HD antenna” is a farce. Now, maybe there’s a new (as new sometimes means better) antenna that is better than an old, but there’s no real “digital HD” issue.

CM seems to be very careful and deliberate in stating that it finds the perfect virtual position during setup; not that it can dynamically shift this position to cater to the individual tower after that additional setup. So my read is that if your antenna is in a less than optimal indoor place, you’ll still be living with the same compromises.

what??!?? SDTV is part of Digital TV standards. Standard-definition television is often, but not limited to 4:3 and since it’s often over looked as being BASED on NTSC - it’s not the same as analog broadcast.

I can tell you as for “You needed to get a new antenna for all those HD channels” I haven’t put up an antenna for 30+ years and receive crystal clear government mandated free digital HD OTA TV as the marketing commercials for a fancy new antenna put it.

That’s not to say not all antennas are created equal, but an antenna is an antenna - it collects RF signals.

Hi…a DVR is really helpful and I’ve been using a Channel Master DVR for a while now. It’s not perfect, but it works well enough for my current needs and I picked it up slightly used at a really good price. I wouldn’t want to be without one.

I bought one of those last year, I love it! Aside from a rudimentary DVR for Antenna channels, it’s a nice little Android box as well.

At the time, they had a $40 Coupon, which I learned about in these forums. Great purchase and I’m still using this. As an aside, it’s also great for the times when you just want to watch TV, as the guide is excellent and switching is Instant.

You can load the Tablo app onto it as well, and then have access to both your onboard DVR and the Tablo live-plus-dvr. Excellent combination.

You can forget all the technical jargon. Only thing that matters is how does it work in the real world? Indoor antennas don’t work for me cause I live near an airport and get a lot of bounce from airplanes. It causes a double signal which bounces around
and leads to pixelation. I forget the technical term for it. Outdoor Antenna fixes the problem. ABC still comes in like crap. Good think I don’t watch it much.

Thing about OTA DVRs, once you get past the fundamental recording OTA, they vary dramatically from each other despite the charts. In some respects, its not one is better than the other, it which suits the users needs.

Chanel Master connects to a single TV (or has single HDMI output) and has streaming apps - works for some. Tablo, outputs via network incorporating with many streaming devices or services, to multiple devices - works for others.

An antenna is an antenna. Just depends of broadcast frequencies. Old rabbit ears will even work.

(or…gulp… a paperclip)

But why have we stopped using aluminum foil extensions on the rabbit ears?

You can’t use aluminum foil on rabbit ears due to climate change.

And you can’t use rabbit ears because it’s the double whammy of fur and meat. No more lucky rabbit feet.

Maybe if we used Canadian Bacon, or maybe “turkey bacon” … maybe that would help?

Well, after reading @zippy 's post, I’m gonna try rabbit bacon (if I can catch one).

Be very careful if you catch that rabbit bacon, if it bites you, you’ll have to get a rabies shot.

Just make sure it’s the right season first!
