More Accurate Channel and Guide

Are there any plans to go with another channel and guide provider? It’s been a few years and multiple requests about inaccurate/missing channel and guide information.

Our team is investigating solutions to resolve these guide concerns. While we can’t yet give an ETA, it is something we’re working on.

@TabloTV - I’m hoping you can keep us informed as to the progress on getting more accurate guide information for all 4th gen Tablo DVR users.

Unfortunately, the workaround of selecting a nearby city or town doesn’t work for all of us.

@269587 - Thanks for suggesting the idea of selecting a nearby city. Previously, I was concerned about running numerous scans because I could lose stations. Once I got my antenna and antenna location worked out, I was able to try the suggestion. Unfortunately, after trying many cities around Boise, nothing allowed me to see the updated channels and programming.

I think the accuracy of the tablo guide is about as much as can be expected from a service at no addl charge. I look at other free online listings and they are similarly inaccurate, especially for “independent” stations, and for the wee hours and weekends. Listings for prime time big network shows are usually correct in most guides IME.

Pardon my geezering, but it’s a far cry from the glory days of the digest format TV Guide. The heroic age of printed TV schedules. You had a major media magazine, available for purchase anywhere, that made its living publishing TV schedules, at the time all OTA. If you subscribed by mail (we did) it was 99.9% delivered on time (I think it was Thursdays). And the broadcasters were eager to get their listings published, so the schedule accuracy was very high IIRC.

Nowadays I look at how long it took some guides to get updated for that new cartoon network, and I wonder if anybody cares on the scheduling end. It’s ad supported, right, so I would think that the broadcasters would like to get the schedule listed correctly ?Maybe the guide services were asking for more fees than the cartoon execs were willing to pay?

I don’t know if I agree with that. TitanTV is free and has the correct information. Since everyone is putting ads in their apps now, it might make sense to insert an ad into the guide. It’s not ideal, but it’s worth it to me if it meant all of the guide information was correct.

In my area, searching for newer programming may not work even on the main channels. Thankfully, most of the main CBS, ABC, NBC, FOX, and PBS channel information is correct.

We’ll see what solution Tablo comes up with.

PS: I’m also a geezer, but my parents weren’t going to pay for TV Guide. The weekly TV guides provided in the Sunday newspapers were up to date.

Funny thing, in my locale, TitanTV had the same incorrect listings as Tablo, TVG online, and TV listings plus.

I recall liking the layout and info on TitanTV, but my Tablo guide shows a bunch of 2nd string stations that did not even show up on Titan. So I didn’t look at Titan again.

No matter, for the big networks and PBS they are all generally correct.

Doc says I need to keep my BP down, so I started by limiting my expectations of Tablo and I am much happier that way. Plus the thrill of OTA reception the old fashioned way. I am an old SWL and catching signals out of the air plus recording them is my idea of fun For what tablo cost, and for what it accomplishes for me, I am happy. And no Roku problems for me either, so far.

I grew up using the “tv program” as we called it, out of the Sunday 'paper. In adulthood I splurged and subscribed to TVG till the end of the digest format. Subscribing was the only way to be sure I would have a copy, b/c it sold out at the supermarket so fast.

Peace.

I don’t get stressed over it. I’m just pointing out the guide problems that I’ve seen so hopefully Tablo can make improvements.

I suggested the ad-supported option in case Scripps can’t make a completely free guide work on their balance sheet.
