Live TV is great on Android and Roku Streaming Stick; bad on Roku Express

Live TV works well on my Pixel 8 Pro, and my Roku Streaming Stick 4K. But when I watch Live TV on my Roku Express 2022, all channels appear sharp for a second or two, but then start freezing and pixelating.

Network signal is strong at all devices (e.g., Pixel 8 Pro works well in the same location as the Roku Express 2022).

Other video streaming (e.g. Amazon Prime Video) works great on the Roku Express 2022.

Watching recordings works well on all channels and all devices.

How can I get live TV working on my Roku Express 2022?

What troubleshooting steps have you tried? I would hate to list things you’ve already done and waste your time…

What is the model number of that basic Express? The 3960 is pathetic and exists only for really basic use. It only has 512MB of RAM (and 512MB channel storage), which leaves nearly nothing available for buffering. The Streaming Stick has 1GB of RAM and 4GB channel storage.

Throw that Express in the garbage. The Express 4K+ is vastly superior, similar to your stick, and not that much more then the basic Express.

Thanks for your reply. I think andyross is on to what the problem is.

It is a 3960X. Sadly I just bought this Express ($18), thinking it would be sufficient for my old HD TV. I will take your advice, stop trying to get it to work, and upgrade when I want to watch live TV; for now I’ll just live with it (and do live TV on my main 4K TV, my phone, and my iPad…).

Thanks for your reply.

Upgrading makes sense. Off hand I can’t remember if that Express only works on 2.4ghz. For the best, non-buffering experience, you’ll definitely want to be on a 5ghz network when using your Tablo.

I can vouch that the Express 4k+ works very well and even on an HD TV has a clearer picture.

Edit: You could still try a few things to improve your Tablo experience on the 3960X. If you’re still interested, say the word! :).

I have a couple of 3910RW that are about six years old. These are the ones that were a Walmart exclusive and had both HDMI and also composite inputs. I got them specifically because I had a few TVs that only had one HDMI port. They are old, and they were cheap. They have 512MB of memory and 256MB for channel storage. They handle 802.11b/g/n.

For me, these mostly work just fine with the Tablo. The only problem I really experience with these streamers is the occasional picture squished in the upper left corner on the lower resolution channels.

I only bring this up as an example of Tablo working with a lower-end Roku… at least for me.

Agreed. Same experience with my 3910RW. Stuck on the 2.4ghz network I didn’t have very many problems with buffering or interference. The green screen/cornering problem is the only reason I stopped using it at home.
