The app on LG TV is terrible and freezes, blue screen and not communicating with the server. Please fix!!
I also have a LG TV with the TABLO app installed. And an Android phone with the Tablo app installed. My experience is that if there is a Tablo issue, the app on my phone will mirror the issue you see on your LG TV. I’ve only had my Tablo for about 6 weeks, but in that time I’ve found that the near constant issues I’ve had were primarily two things: technical issues at Tablo’s end, and antenna issues at my end. Antenna placement and whether it is ideal for reception of the various frequencies transmitted by your local stations, as well as the distance from their OTA towers can cause problems. I set my Tablo up via Ethernet cable to my router. I tried and failed to make a wifi connection to my router. Current remaining issues for me remain having a proper antenna for reception of Lo-VHF band transmitter signals from the local ABC affiliate. I think the issue you have has nothing to do with Tablo’s LG TV app, and everything to do with the points made above, at least in my experience.
I too have the LG HD, brand new and a new Gen4 Tablo w/4 channels.
WiFi connection with 350 M up and down fiber. ATT.
The LG Tablo App at entry is very sluggish. 5-10 sec. My Android phone with Tab app responds and is ready within 1 sec. Same WiFi network. I only have one.
Also when scan back or fwd it is not real responsive. Android is just fine.
Sometimes the Gen4 hangs and have to do home on the TV then re select the Tab app.
Can not get closed caption.. WTH is that.
When paused then back to play the screen remains dim for about 5 seconds.
My Android does have the dim screen but when I go to play it take less than a second to go full bright.
Lastly, the thumbnails for full screen are gone. Only get one! Android is the same.
TV reception is excellent as is the recordings.
We have been Tablo users for about 4 years with the Legacy 4 chan
I see that this thread is dormant. Not sure what that is about.
When looking at recordings it just shows the thumb of the recorded series but does not show the # of recordings that have been recorded.
Not sure if this is the Tab app for the LG, or the LG TV… or the Gen4.
I think that Scripts is not doing a good job of making the menu etc user friendly like the Legacy.
The legacy is great.
Why did I go with the Gen 4? I needed to replace my old Visio and wanted to upgrade to Gen 4. Visio does not support the Tablo, thus I needed a WiFi capable TV or get a supporting streamer. Fire etc. Too much junk.
Fast Internet over fiber is different than a fast home network - you won’t get the same speed and reliability with wifi that you will with fiber. The wifi connection between your new TV and router compared to the one between your phone and your router can be very different and are not guaranteed to work the same.
Can you temporarily (or permanently) hard-wire your new TV to check how it runs? Is your Tablo hard-wired to Ethernet?
Also, thinking you don’t need a streaming device may also lead to more headaches. I’m using my 2010 Samsung 55" TV with a brand new Roku Ultra and it works as good as a new TV. Also, both the Gen4 and Legacy apps are available for Roku and FireTV Stick (we have both), and maybe even Onn and AppleTV.
Thanks for the reply.
Agree that the phone can respond differently but all of our computers show Wifi speeds of 300+ up and down as is our phones. ATT fiber.
More to follow.
Lots of good things have happened.
Along the way my Chromebook Tablo app stopped working? Tablo said Google Chromebook does not have a Tablo app. I have video of it running on my CBook. It works great!
Sorry about the background audio.
Chrome Book running Tablo 4th gen app.
Now for some good and bad news!
I decided to get another TV to test.
Got a TCl 55" 55Q77K
After a quick setup, every gripe I had with the TABLO Gen 4 is gone.
The App looks and feels like the Legacy! The full set of thumbnails are there. Pause to play works with no selecting the screen button.
There is no dimming during pause. Tablo boot time is about 2 seconds v/s <>8 sec for the LG Tv.
The screen responses are very quick to the remote selections in the Tablo App.
I did install the Legacy App on this TCL tv and it works great!
The programming of the LG Tablo gen 4 app is garbage. Cumbersome to say the least!
The OS of the LG has a lot of overhead or poor interface coding.
Anyway, I hope this TCL tv will last like my old Visio 55. It is 5 years old.
Only reason to switch TV’s was the Wifi Gen4 requirement.
The Samsung TV 55" etc might have a good Tablo App but the features were not there that I needed for other things. I am not fond of Samsung products.
WebOS will eventually let you down too. LG likes to deprecate their children. Again, nothing smart about SmartTV OS’s. Even Google deprecates on such. Would you like to replace your $500-3000+ TV every 3-5 years or, a $100 high end set top box with much much longer support cycles that you might have to replace every 7-15 years?
Valid point! Although this TV cost $299.
At 81 I am not thinking much further than tomorrow although wife and I are of sound mind and body, thankfully.
We watch about 2-3 hrs of recorded tv a day.
What is a $100 high end set top box? Fire etc?
Thanks for the response.
Jim.
While I know for “4th gen owners” it is considered anathema, worldwide, the number one streaming platform (2nd place isn’t close) is Roku. And, if you haven’t had to go vomit, I will say that with Roku, you always want their “top end” as they usually support it for a very very very long time. And with that said, if you aren’t on your way to the hospital (due to all the Roku references), I never paid more than $60 for any of my Roku Ultra boxes (I think the lowest I paid new was like $45).
Have friends that do Roku. We watch TV way different than most folks.
We record ota series like NCIS"S, FBI, Jeopardy. We may not get to watch full episodes or may not watch TV for a week or two. Recording allows us to know where we left off and if needed watch part of a previous epp to catch up. We had 3 of them for the most used channels that might have silmultanious record times.
For years we used Magnavox/Funia OTA recorders. Like this:
Magnavox MDR513
Cumbersome to program but it accomplished what we wanted to record to play later. When the seasons shut down for a break we could catch up.
The also had a VCR and a DVD R/W drive.
Over about 10 years I did repair various issues but they lasted until the Tablo came out and seemed to stabilize so we retired the Mag’s.
That is my story.
The first question we had was:
How to record OTA Series and epp’s and know where we are in the epp’s.
We do not subscribe to any streaming service. Our antenna gives us about 150 channels of which we only use 16.
Legacy models are no longer being mfg. My fear of not making a switch before ours crapped out was the sole reason to switch to Gen 4.
Gen 4 forced my hand to get another tv with WiFi and compatible with Tablo Gen 4. Our old tv was at 8 years so it was ok for me to retire it. Gave it to someone who needed a nice TV for just watching local channels or cable.

I can vouch for that. I have a 10 year old Roku stick that still works fine. I would have bought a 20 dollar stick of some kind before a new TV myself though.
I have old TVs with a mix of not to old to very old Rokus and for the most part, they all work great. Three of my TV’s are a bit slowish but otherwise work great. The three slowish TVs all have built in Rokus but to be fair, they are all 5+ years old. I agree with @cjcox, that buying the top end Roku is the wisest choice. I got a couple of Roku’s that were top of the line about 8-9 years and they still work flawlessly and are relatively quick.
