The Legacy Tablo app doesn’t work on 2 Roku Streaming Sticks and 2 Roku 3s after the Roku devices upgraded to Software version 14.0. Both Live and Recorded shows don’t work. The “Playback Failed” error message (Surround Sound error message) is displayed when trying to access both Live and Recorded shows. The fixes for the Surround Sound problem don’t work. There are many reports of this problem for the Legacy app on the Roku Community, in addition to the Fourth Generation Tablo app problem, which reveals itself in a different manner.
My 4200just got Roku OS 14 2 days ago. My 4210 has Toku OS 14 and the 4210 is nothing more then a rebranded 4200. It seems to have the same guts. Both work but I never turned on surround sound. I would turn off surround sound and see if that works. I mostly use OG gen 1 units.
My Roku 3810RW Streaming Stick+ updated to v14.0 and the Legacy app no longer plays live or recorded shows. I tried all the various audio settings in the Roku, but nothing worked.
My Tablo is a 2 tuner TV connected HDMI Tablo. The Roku stick is connected to an old LG tv. The Tablo is connected to a Sony Bravia by HDMI, so it still works. I have another Roku stick on another TV but haven’t checked it yet, though it was working this morning. I also have a Fire TV stick 4k connected to a projector and the Legacy Tablo app on it works fine.
Both of my Rokus are on 14.0 and no issues (yet) with my legacy Tablo.
I have a Roku Ultra (4800x) and an old Roku 2 (4210x).
The Tablo app is Version 3.1 from August 2023. Surround sound is off (I think I did this years ago when I had a problem).
Sharing in case this helps diagnose the problem for others.
Do you have an OTA or an HDMI Tablo? I have 2 Quad HDMI Legacy Tablos that the Legacy app doesn’t work with Roku Software Version 14.0. Surround Sound has always been OFF on both Quad HDMIs, it’s a non-issue. Thanks for your input.
I have 2 Quad HDMI Legacy Tablos that the Legacy app doesn’t work with Roku Software Version 14.0. Surround Sound has always been OFF on both Quad HDMIs, it’s a non-issue. The Legacy app problem with Roku Software Version 14.0 appears to be with Legacy HDMI Tablos, not OTAs.
I have a Roku Streaming Stick 4K 3820x at version 14.0 that is working with my Tablo HDMI 2 tuner. All audio settings on the stick are set to auto. It’s connected to a TCL Roku tv (the apps run too slow on its native OS).
The common denominator between the Legacy HDMI Tablos and the gen 4s with this Roku problem is that they both stream the native mpeg2 video and ac3 audio.
I have 2 - 4 tuner tablos - one from 06/2014 and the other is the last new legacy unit. All 3 of my Rokus have updated to 14.0.4 and all 3 are working just fine with both tablos. Do not know when they updated, but everything is working fine - just like before.
Are the 2- 4 tuner tablos Quad HDMIs ?
On my Streaming Stick+ that wasn’t working, I changed the Digital output format->Custom to “Dolby Digital Plus”, and now it works. Go figure.
No, they are both legacy units
I have a 4 tuner OTA legacy Tablo.
I have two Roku sticks, one is an older 3600x (non 4k) and the other is a newer 3810CA Streaming Stick+.
Both Rokus have updated to Roku OS 14.0 although the 3600 is on 14.0 build 4.12221-24 and the 3810 is on 14.0 build 4.12221-50
I cannot get any recordings or live TV to play using the 3810 because I get the message that the Roku cannot play back the surround sound recording.
The 3600 does work and has no problem playing back the same recordings or live TV.
All the 3600 audio settings are on Auto and it just works.
I’ve tried setting the 3810 to all Auto as well as specifically to Dolby Digital+ and neither works.
Any thoughts?
Ace,
As I understand it, when you use a Roku streaming device (as opposed to TVs with Roku OS built in), the ability to play surround is based on what the TV or AV receiver you plug the hdmi in to can decode. Roku scans the HDMI port to determine if it can pass DD+ 5.1 to the target device.
For dumb tvs I had built in 2009, I could not get sound from the Roku if the Tablo had surround mode on and this was June 2002 from a 3rd gen network Tablo. However, TVs built in 2015 that I had worked with no issue with the Roku. Therefore, I put Android TV devices on the 2009 sets and configured the Tablo app by deselecting surround sound passthrough (an option not available on Rokus).
I think TVs built after 2011 or 2012 generally support DD+ 5.1, allowing Roku devices to work with surround on.
I understand what you are saying, I have an old Toshiba TV that has never worked with Surround enabled on the Tablo but I’m not using it anymore. The thing is I have the two Rokus plugged into two different HDMI ports on the same Marantz AV receiver feeding into a Samsung TV. Both the TV & the receiver are about 3 yrs old. I swapped the ports and the problem follows the 3810. I also tried going directly into the TV but that didn’t work either.
It’s weird that the 4th Gen 3600 works but the newer one doesn’t. And yes, the 3810 has worked with surround enabled previously so I know it should work.
Just adding some more info.
I have a Legacy HDMI, so 99% of viewing is directly from the Tablo. The Tablo and multiple streamers are connected to an AV receiver.
On a Roku Ultra 4800 on that receiver, with audio set to Passthrough, audio and video work.
On a bedroom TV (roughly 2017 Samsung Smart TV) and a Roku Express 4K+, it acts like others report. The auto mode says it is defaulting to stereo. I get the decode error. If I force DD, I get video, but no audio.
