Latest from Lon, talks about Tablo

Remember to visit the links to make your voice heard against the evil broadcaster’s desire to limit or outright prevent your use of OTA recorded content. ATSC 3 would mean (currently) the end of Tablo as well as other providers, or greatly limit how they can be used. If you like OTA, you need to make your voice heard.

Short summary, in ATSC 1.0, you are free to capture and record OTA broadcasts and the sky’s the limit with what you can do with that (doesn’t remove the broadcaster’s rights, just doesn’t prevent use). New ATSC 3.0, while ok at first, the primary shift has been to DRM encrypt OTA, requiring licensing a the device level as well as a means (Internet in most cases, yep, required!) for distribution of keys that have to be used to decrypt content. The goal is to move from “rights” to full control over … you. That is, the ability to record, playback and for “how long” will be completely under the control of the broadcaster. You will not be able to use just any device anymore. In fact, under current implementation, DRM decryption is limited to platforms with Google’s widevine support only. So, not only fully controlled (no remote playback, etc.), but right now, also limited to “one” provider, which may lock out use on many platforms.
