Issue with my Tablo 4th Gen (Broken Recording on one specific channel)

4th Gen Model. Why is my Tablo malfunctioning when it records one specific channel sometimes? Okay, so I live in Salt Lake City, and sometimes, when I record ABC, the audio and video start off sync, and then after 2 minutes, the video doesn’t load, just pictures. This forces me to stop the existing recording restart it, and delete the broken recording whenever I catch my Tablo doing it. Tonight, this time, it was recording no sound at all, forcing me to, you guessed it, restart the recording and permanently delete the broken one. This only happens on one channel (ABC) all the other channels I record work fine. Why is my Tablo doing this?

I think this has happen in other cities with ABC with other users. From what I can remember, its an issue with the channel. I hope someone can chime with in deeper answer.

It appears that in Salt Lake all the stations broadcast from a tower at the top of the same mountain peak, so they should be pretty consistent. Have you tried connecting directly to your TV’s tuner? Do you get inconsistent signal there as well?

Do you have the Tablo amp turned on? also have a antenna amp on?

You could have too much signal coming in. it can come in too “hot”

Just the Tablo Amplifier (sorry I wasn’t sure if I was replying)

I almost always get consistent signal. My antenna is upstairs against the window.

What kind of antenna do you have?

Indoor RCA Antenna. I don’t use the RCA amplifier though, I use Tablo’s amplifier instead.

In most cases you will have better results if you use the amplifier built into the antenna. Using the built-in amplifier, it amplifies the signal before any additional interference is introduced into the signal. Using Tablo’s amplifier, it amplifies the antenna signal plus any additional interference from the cable, LED lights, microwaves, etc. This isn’t always true, such as, if your antenna amplifier is of poor quality. It’s always best to try different configurations until you find the one that works best for you.

I have this problem repeatedly. It only occurs with the free streaming channels. I no longer try to watch the broken up movies because the ending is often missing. There us some sort of incompatibility between Tablo firmware and the streaming channels. I just accept it ad delete those movies.

Other issues: Tablo frequently restarts while I am watching a recording.

ROKU DOES NOT WORK WELL WITH THE TABLO app. I switched to Fire Stick and it works well.

My first Tablo failed after two months. Customer service was great. They promptly sent a new one and it’s working fine with the exception of the abone mentioned issues.

I will continue to enjoy my Tablo for OTA recordings. It serves its purpose. Ive tried others. The very best is Fire TV recast. It’s too bad that Amazon discontinued it. The worst that I tried was Sling TV Anywhere. It was difficult to set up and only worked for a couple months. Customer service was awful and would not honor the warranty.

You’re not the only one. I don’t even watch the FAST channels anymore as they are unstable and crash often. And, no, it isn’t my network.

I’m in the same boat and I’ve turned all the FAST channels off. But, I guess it could be my network. Shouldn’t be with all the updates/upgrades I’ve done to get the Tablo working properly, but it could be. Or maybe it’s the device. At this point I’m inclined to point at the device.

I’m with you on the culprit. I’m convinced it is either the device, or something from the server-side.

It’s odd, though, because it seems that some people use these FAST channels without issue. I know my network has been improved and optimized because everything is now working well.

Some of the Tablo issues are just baffling but can mostly be boiled down to reception or network. We would try these channels again if we thought we’d use them, but we just left them disabled since the network and device upgrades.

I have a similar problem. I have a newer LG TV which works fine with the new LG app that they just released. But now when I go to view things on the same TV through the Chromecast about every 5 seconds I get a little spinning problem. I can watch it in small segments with spinning in between. Drives me crazy. When I watch the same recording on the LG TV on the new app it works fine. So this may be a bug in the Chromecast on the LG TV because I don’t have the same problem with my Samsung TV.

Are the Chromecasts on the different TVs the same model? If not, what model are they?
Try swapping the Chromecasts between the two TVs and see if the problem follows the Chromecasts or stay with the TV.

Great idea! The Samsungs are all different so I’ll try switching see what happens. I had tried rebooting the Chromecast but that didn’t help.

If it turns out it is the Chomecast, try switching power supplies between them. Could be a faulty power supply.

Thanks, that’s a great idea!

Almost 5 months later and lots of replies to my post within the past week. Anyway, my Tablo hasn’t been acting up recently. I record almost everything that airs on primetime (with the exception of reruns or uninteresting events). Unfortunately the problems sometimes still occur, either starting recording with audio off sync then never load, or audio will mute and the recording time gets scrambled. At first I thought it was a problem with one of my tuners, until I saw the comments that it could be my antenna. I have never watched FAST channels on Tablo so I’m not aware that the same problem could be happening there. I have now been starting my ABC recordings early (5-10 min) to prevent missing any shows should my Tablo glitch out again.
