I’ve recently come across the Tablo app and it looks like an interesting way to watch live TV without a traditional cable setup. The idea of being able to stream local channels and recordings on different devices seems pretty convenient, especially for people trying to cut the cord.
I haven’t used it long enough yet, so I’m curious how it performs for others. Does it stream smoothly for you, and is the setup easy to manage? Would you say it’s worth using as a main option for TV watching at home?
I’ve used an Amazon Recast for almost 7 years. It’s been discontinued and orphaned for over 3. The Tablo is pretty much the same and has been very reliable for me over the last 6-9 months.
I have set 5 of the units up. After I purchased one, I ended up setting them up for friends and my parents. Overall, it typically works very well. Sometimes if goes into an offline mode but you can still watch live channels. This has occurred for us a couple times but it’s not often. The streaming is very smooth and the tuner in the Tablo works better than the new TVs we just installed with ATSC 3.0 tuners which is kind of wild.
I have noticed since we all use different devices to stream too that the user interfaces are not the same depending on the operating systems. My parents use a Roku, and they seem to have the best user interface by far.
Be patient setting them up out of the box as sometimes it can take a second attempt and needs a reset. Ethernet cord in the back or being right beside your router will always make your life easier during set up and usage.
Exactly what I’m using it for and have owned it for about a year and a half. Seems to be the best appliance like device out there for watching over the air and recording with the DVR.
We’ve been using a Tablo for 10+ years and we use it mainly to record network shows and watch them later so we can manually skip through commercials. We transitioned to the Gen4 four-tuner model over a year ago and it has been working great for us, minus some company faux pas in their apps and service delivery. It’s mostly been good for us.
