Part of the specification is that it downgrades to whatever the device suppoort. I recently got a new laptop and along with supporting 802.11AC I also made sure it had the gigabit ethernet connection too. Some laptops only have up to 199 on the ethernet but still 892.11AC making the wireless faster if conditions re right.
