Improving TV Guide Data Availability on the Tablo Platform

Hi folks!

Over the past few months, we’ve been working on a project to improve the availability of TV guide data on the 4th Generation Tablo platform, filling in gaps where data was unavailable from our commercial guide data supplier.

Using our new TV guide data management tools, we have already resolved many missing guide data cases in locations across the country on channels including Nosey, Bounce, Story TV, Catchy Comedy, MeTV Toons.

These tools will enable us to continue mapping guide data from existing networks and channels to those still displaying ‘Programming Not Available’ and handle new missing guide data cases reported by Tablo customers.

We are not currently accepting requests to fix cases of incorrect TV guide data.

Unresolvable Missing Guide Data Cases
Unfortunately, some networks in some specific regions (see examples below) do not provide guide data to aggregators or local affiliates anywhere in the United States.

Those cases, and cases where no relevant program listings from another local affiliate within that network exists, will not be able to be resolved.

Channel Number Location Call Sign Network
15.5 Phoenix, AZ KNXV HSN2
2.2 Dallas, TX KDTN-ES Daystar Espanol
39.6 Phoenix, AZ KTAZ Nosey
40.12 Phoenix, AZ KEJR EMLW Infomercials
25.3 Corona, CA KVEA Telemundo
20.2 Los Angeles, CA KNLA-CD MBN
14.2 Phoenix, AZ K14RK-D GNTV Latino
3.5 Charlotte, NC WBTV Oxygen
8.1 Chicago, IL WILC-CD Daystar
39.6 Paradise, NV KBLR Nosey

How to Request a Fix for Missing Guide Data
If one or more of the channels in the Live TV Grid of your 4th Generation Tablo displays ‘Programming Not Available’ and IS NOT on the list above, please submit a request with as much detail as possible using our new Guide Data Request form.

The form is accessible from the ‘Submit a Request’ button on the Tablo Support Portal.

We will do our best to resolve your case within 7-10 business days.

NOTE – Please wait 48 hours after initial setup of your Tablo device and up to 2 weeks after the launch of a new over-the-air TV network to make a request.

In the Future - Plans to Address Incorrect Guide Data Cases
Cases of incorrect guide data are more difficult to resolve.

Therefore, we are not currently accepting requests to fix cases of incorrect data where channels:

  • Incorrectly display the guide data from a different channel in your lineup (i.e. your CBS channel displays the guide data from your NBC station)
  • Display guide data from the correct channel, but at an incorrect time (i.e. programs airing 3 hours in the future are shown as currently airing)

We hope to resolve these types of cases in the future as we continue to enhance our guide data management tools and processes.

We also cannot accept requests to fix missing or incorrect data for legacy Tablo devices as they use a different TV Guide Data management process.

Thank you so much for your patience as we’ve worked to develop these tools and processes. We look forward to working with you to enhance TV guide data availability on the Tablo platform.

@TabloTV, thanks for designing this tool. I have submitted the long overdue corrections for the Jackson, Mississippi market. I am hoping the changes are relatively easy for your team to make.

Request submitted!

Everyone, please note that if there is an issue with Tablo being able to fix the guide issue for a particular channel, you should reach out to that station and respectfully submit a request to have their program director or chief engineer have guide data configuration updated with the guide data aggregators.

It appears that Gracenote is only accepting changes from stations themselves.

Many stations don’t even have program data in their PSIP broadcast info. In some cases, that could be more a technical issue. Here in Chicago, I know one station that sometimes has info, and sometimes doesn’t. In some cases, I guess programming can come from generic data for a subchannel.

Thanks for implementing this fix!

Tablo has been very good at listening to their customers and actually fixing problems. (Previously, I used the Amazon Recast and my experience was just the opposite. …they never listened to their customers, and many issues were never fixed).

One thing I have noticed is that TitanTV (titantv.com) has correct guide information for ALL of my channels. I wonder where they get their guide information?

Most of this is TABLO work designed to fix issues that don’t involve over the air broadcast TV guide data which is problematic too.

Hopefully you will someday be able to fix MeTV toons in Sacramento. Guide shows New York time for shows rather than California time. basically shows 3 hours ahead of whats actually playing.

Any chance of more specifics in program guide data? I watch a lot of old movies and I find the Tablo program guide data doesn’t provide who’s in the movie, year it came out, etc. (as TiVo does). Can we get more than a more generic movie description in this guide? Thanks.

Welcome @lkny to the forum. Ya, there’s quite a difference between the OG Legacy Tablo (image below) and the Gen4 Tablo. Such a shame complete data isn’t available on the newer device. Maybe one day…

I hadn’t realized there was this difference in OG Legacy Tablo. Even more frustrating. Thanks for weighing in though.

BTW, This is what TiVo provides.

So, I don’t know if you saw this or not, but if you go the Guide and click on the movie, then click Movie information, then in the bottom left corner click the About (FireTV) or About This Movie (Roku) button, you get a little more detail.

Just a historical fyi, at one time, even fuller metadata was available on the OG. Maybe not “presented”, but it was there. It was removed because I believe it was in “violation” of terms with gracenote. Gracenote didn’t want a 3rd party to become a proxy for their full metadata.

I watch the Movies! Channel a lot. If you click in the program’s initial window there are options to Watch Live, Record and there’s a button below that that’s labeled as “Movie Information”. And while I was hoping that this button would lead me to extra, more detailed info, it only led me to the same generic program description I got in the initial window.

You should be able to find more information by selecting the ABOUT THIS MOVIE button in the lower left-hand corner of the movie’s launch screen.

Within the Movie Information window, click About (FireTV) or About This Movie (Roku) in the bottom left-hand corner. It gives slightly more information.

Thx I’ll take a look.

Tablo has notified me that they were able to fix 2 out of 3 channels with “Programming Not Available” in my program guide. They have successfully resolved channels 35.7 (Story) and 35.8 (MeTV Toons) (for the Hartford CT DMA). They could not fix channel 35.9 (Dabl), but that is OK with me. Thanks Tablo!
