Hmmm...something off topic?

It appears that when Tablo says they don’t want the competition knowing what they’re doing, they really mean they don’t want YOU knowing what they’re doing (or not doing). This is kind of infuriating that a direct competitor of theirs does exactly what they won’t or can’t. After today, I’m officially looking.

Thank you for this. Hopefully the competition encourages Tablo TV development and also more information to the community.

Well, this is not a Tablo/Recast substitute - more like an OTA tuner with built-in DVR(?)

I think the Zapperbox is a cool device, but it is nearly four times the price of a Tablo, and requires a paid subscription. Also, if you want it on multiple TVs you need multiple devices. The say they have a streaming device app in the works, but it is not coming anytime soon.

I don’t know anything about its reliability compared to Tablo.

Unless I misread, I would need one 4-Tuner and 3 Minis for my 4 TV’s.
$400 + $140 + $140 + $140 = $820
Not a fan of putting a box behind a wall mounted TV which would need power as well.
Expensive to get up and running.
One more remote to deal with.
I looked at ZapperBox first, but a box for every TV was a no-go for me.

Many people would only use one device, and the Zapperbox is just one example.

So it’s mutiny? Looking for another cheap vendor for a good time?

I’ll add that a lot of the problems Tablo Gen4 users experience are self-inflicted. I observed this during the guide service fiasco and again today with people giving insane instructions to others. Asking inane and unrelated questions or telling everyone that your system works fine… It may not even be a Gen4. Or blowing it up themselves and complaining it’s blown up.

The same thing happened with the Personal Computer craze. Millions of non-tech people bought PCs and spent inordinate amounts of time watching the buggy software crash and applying Windows updates that locked up the system. Modems for everyone! Thank goodness cellphones were invented to reduce some of the stress.

I don’t know if these are still available. Everyone is out of stock.

Isn’t the basic functionality of a Tablo being an OTA tuner with a built-in DVR?

Yes, but much more. It’s a WiFi distribution system that doesn’t require a wired connection to a single display. This is what distinguishes the Tablo and Recast from HD Homerun, Zapperbox, etc.

One thing that all the unhappy owners can do is to turn off automatic updates and when there’s a firmware version to be installed reply/select ‘Later’.

Wait and watch… There are no victims only volunteers.
