Closed Caption lacking from networks

Why are so many of the network broadcasts without closed captions? What can be done about it?

Can you give some examples? There are only a few exemptions for not having captions:

Exempt programming

Currently there are two categories of exemptions from the closed captioning rules, self-implementing and economically burdensome:

  • Self-implementing exemptions include public service announcements shorter than 10 minutes and not paid for with federal dollars, programming shown from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m., and programming primarily textual. There is also an exemption for locally produced non-news programming with no repeat value. To see a complete list of self-implementing exemptions, visit the FCC’s website at: www.fcc.gov/general/self-implementing-exemptions-closed-captioning-rules.
  • The FCC has established procedures for petitioning for an exemption from the closed captioning rules when compliance would be economically burdensome.

Virtually every primetime show whether view “live” or saved on the Tablo.

Have you tried connecting the antenna directly to the TV to see if that gets captions? It could be a problem with the Tablo itself. How long have you had the Tablo? Also, what streaming device are you using?

can’t plug directly into tv.Antenna wire too short. Not streaming just OTA.

Hi @Wayneo ,

Which platform are you using?

Unfortunately, our Samsung and LG apps can’t pull closed captions from over-the-air TV. This article explains why:
