It would be very useful to be able to directly select a channel by number without going to the guide. This would have greatly reduced the negative impact of the recent problem of the guide not working.
While I agree, that would be a nice feature, the vast majority of streaming devices don’t have numeric buttons. That includes Roku which controls about 80% of the market. It might only be useful on smart TVs which use the same remote for all functions.
While it is true that many remotes don’t have number buttons, it’s also true they don’t have keyboards, yet there’s a way to enter search terms. The same approach could be used to enter numbers as alphabetic characters.
Actually, most Roku’s do support number inputs, but few remotes have it. I have a universal remote and added them in. But, as far as I can tell, The Roku Live TV guide is the only app that supports it.
That said, the Roku app for phones/tablets has a keyboard mode, and that could be used.
The next best thing is using the DOWN navigation button on your remote to open the guide ribbon across the bottom of an active channel. Useful in some cases.
