I have a legacy Tablo. I recently purchased a 4th Gen unit but it is still in the box because I am worried there may be unacceptable changes. I’ve read the info on TABLO and am thoroughly confused. They keep talking about the paid subscription for the program guide on the Legacy Tablo. I have never paid a dime for my program guide. Also, we are used to fast forwarding through commercials when we are watching recorded programs (99% or our viewing). Will we still be able to do that? Anything else different I should know about?
The “paid” guide on Legacy is for the long duration guide. Earlier on in the OG life though, Tablo allowed the purchase of a “lifetime” sub.
Here is a list of changes.
Yes, you can FF or Skip 10 sec increments. But, the legacy could auto skip commercials which the 4gen can’t.
The 4th gen device has a free long duration guide already. No extra charge. To get more than the 48hr guide on the OG, you needed a subscription. But again, at one time, they did offer lifetime sub offering.
Edit: In regards to “commercial skip” on OG, it was only available for a limited time and it had a fee and uses “the cloud”.
I have to be completely honest here - the Gen4, even with all the reported issues, has grown on us and we’ve been using it exclusively for long-term and everyday viewing and recording. So, we could probably do the Gen4 firmware upgrade on our OG Legacy.
We never really experienced many issues interruptions except for when our network wasn’t optimized. But since we updated our home network devices and cabling, it’s been very good.
With the app provided by @senke7su (which works surprisingly well by the way), the only thing remaining for us would is to be able to manage our recordings/schedule remotely. We don’t really need to watch remotely. Although, this would be a big bonus for many.
After reading through the list of changes in the link provided by @PL1, you do not have to discontinue your Legacy service and you can run them side-by-side, in tandem. I recommend you use the higher-end Roku Ultra 4850 or FireTV Stick 4K Max if you don’t already have one of these. They both have more memory and Wifi6 support.
The gen 4 needs a legacy style manual recording feature.
And some purchased in the summer of 2023 a new legacy gen 3 dual 128GB. It came with free guide service.
That is SO important. I’ve only had the 4th gen for a couple of weeks now and already, I had a guide data problem and had to record based on the incorrect information for the time slot.
Wife hates the G4 app and uses the Legacy app only.
I’m trying to like it, but just not happening.
Too many little things that irritate me.
I went back to use my OG Legacy today and it was like looking at an app designed 10 years ago. It just didn’t look polished nor was it as snappy as the Gen4. I think we’re fully committed to the Gen4 now.
I wish the new one looked more like the old one. I like the bigger thumbnails and the larger text. It hard for me the read the new one because the font is so small. I have suggested to add the feature of making rather font bigger when it was first introduced but so far nothing. I guess for people like me the old legacy app is better for older people who’s eyesight is not as good as when they were twenty.[quote=“wysiwyggin, post:9, topic:44974, full:true”]
