I see from prior threads that this has been a known issue for at least a year, but I’m going to chime in in case there’s been any changes or workarounds.
I’m trying to set a series recording for BBC News America - it comes one with a new episode at the same time on the same channel every day, but the Tablo doesn’t seem to recognize this and only lets me record one episode (even though if I go to episode list, it clearly sees that future episodes are coming up).
Is there a fix or workaround for this?
Alternatively, from an old fart who used to programs VCRs, it it too much to ask for a “dumb” scheduled record feature?
You didn’t say which app/device you are using. Or whether you tried via the News, TV Shows, or Live TV menus. And in the forum I think when you ask for a dumb scheduled record feature it probably means the manual record feature.
Device is a brand new 4th gen (Model TF1282B-02-CN) running latest firmware (2.2.58). Using FireTV app latest version (2.1), but also attempted on my iPhone app.
I’m trying through the “Live” guide. If I go to a series I don’t care about (for example, “Touched by an Angel,” I get an option to “Schedule Series Recording.” But when I go to the thing I do want to record every day (BBC News America), that option is missing. This is even though the Tablo recognizes that there are upcoming airings. (Collage of three screenshots below.)
And I can’t find a manual record feature that lets me schedule a recurring recording. I need either (1) a way to have Tablo provide me the series recording option for BBC World News or (2) a way to tell it "record channel 26.2 every day from 5:30 to 6:00. Do either of those exist?
I don’t think it matters if you are using a legacy app and legacy device or a gen4 app and gen 4 device.
The Live TV grid has each broadcast mapped as individual somethings which can be individually recorded. The guide has multiple slots for the “show” but no actual episodes.
This will all be corrected once we make the U.K. the 51st state.
I didn’t say anything about which apps can or can not record off of the Live TV grid entry.
The easiest way to describe this is by legacy app and that the Live TV grid has entries for each time slot but have no Show or Season or Episode relationship.
While if I look at the TV Shows guide for PBS I have not one Show Entry for BBC News I have 10. And I interpret that to be 1 entry for each of the upcoming week days. But you can’t tell since these entries are empty and have no episode data.
Could it be that legacy uses the same basic guide but stores it in a different database schema.
If you have had a legacy device for a while one thing you learn is that most legacy apps are robust and can at the minimum display of inconsistent entries. The gen 4 apps often go into the spinning wheel of death looking for relationship data that doesn’t exist.
Now I would bet that if tablo fixed the inconsistencies I see on legacy the problem might just clear up on a gen 4. Of course if PBS isn’t distributing the minimum required data that would be a problem.
The OG Legacy device shows Record Episodes in this Series while the Gen4 doesn’t. So, it appears that I can schedule the BBC news series on the Legacy Tablo using the Gen4 app. This is on an Android phone running Gen4 app v2.1
After reviewing the OG Legacy through the Fire TV Stick 4k Max, it didn’t set anything to record, even though I set Record Episodes in the Series to NEW.
On another note, trying to access or set up series recording using the Gen4 device and Gen4 app yielded this error:
Results depend on what gen 4 app you use. I don’t remember this show ever having anything marked as new. But you the show should be able to schedule it as new.
Yes that might be helpful. That is why I posted it earlier. The other example shows the same channel with the prior program DW News which has the ability to display the series.
There used to be a “bug” caused by Gracenote that failed to flag some programs as “new”. I believe it has been resolved. I used that as an example for why BBC America cannot be selected to record from the Live Guide depending upon the app.
But you guys already read the stuff I posted so no need to repeat myself.
Even after I set it to record and it had the yellow line beneath, when I tried to display in Library or pull it up via Live the LGTV just hung up with the spinner and timed out.
Yes, it appears to display correctly, but setting up a series recording of it didn’t work for me at all using the Gen4 app with the Legacy or Gen4 device. As @zippy mentioned, mine aren’t marked as New, either.
Last night I tested it on my Fire Stick 4k G2 and was able to get tonight’s episode to mark as record. The series options button was to the right so “click”.
An ugly vertical message “unknown error” pops up and hangs the device.
There are several BBC News programs with names like:
BBC News
BBC News America
BBC World News America
All on different channels and not marked as “NEW”.
