Is there any fix to the constant buffering on Apple TVs specifically. Every other device works flawlessly. All my Apple TVs buffer. I had to buy sling just to watch the game last night.
Before we jump to HDD and bandwidth issues
I have tried multiple versions of AppleTV both WiFi and Ethernet. I have no HDD and I have shut down all devices on my network except my AppleTVs and my Tablo. This was an issue at the beginning of the beta. It was fixed, it’s now back.
Tablo is a direct client to client transfer. If you’re watching it live, its digesting the RF signal and it’s a direct client to client transfer.
With that said, if you’re hardwired in, you still get buffering, something is wrong.
Being a network dude for 20 years, I always start at the router, then the switch (if you have one). If you’re bought a $30 router from Walmart, you will get $30 of performance. If you have an
Eero’s Mesh unit, I would confirm you have good signal between the nodes.
At the same time, The Apple TV app is fairly new/green. I would make sure the APP is on the newest version.
Is it possible that, during those buffering issues, another device or user was also streaming a movie or gaming across your network? Maybe not Tablo content, but anything that required high bandwidth internally or from the Internet across your network? We’ve seen this at our house in the past, where we may have a conflict with the kids, but that was before we did a network survey and replaced things that weren’t maximizing our bandwidth.
Since the Tablo is 10/100 Ethernet and only Wifi5 (I believe 802.11ac, 2013 tech) capable, I think the wifi could be faster than Ethernet but maybe less consistent. Nevertheless, we still connect the Tablo to Ethernet.
@KimchiGUN has some sage and succinct network advice - here’s what we upgraded over the past 6-8 months after plucking his and others’ network recommendations from a multitude of posts:
Started with a Wifi6 capable router
Upgraded Internet service from 300/10 [dn/up] to 1000/1000 fiber
Requested a static IP address from ISP (for other reasons)
Replaced hand-me-down Cat5/Cat5e cables with new Cat6
Replaced multiple 5- and 8-port switches (4) with a single 24-port managed switch
Replaced older streaming devices with new Wifi6 capable devices
Tablos are connected via Ethernet and streamers are connected via 5GHz wifi
I’m not saying you or anyone else needs to do this same thing - just saying this is what we did and maybe you can glean something from it. I hope you can get your system working for consistent, trouble-free viewing.
NOTE: I’m just realizing how old the networking standards used in the latest Tablo are, which was released in 2023. Ethernet is 10/100…and wifi is Wifi5**. Probably could’ve been 100/1000 and Wifi6 at a minimum.
