4th Gen Quad Table WIFI Failure to connect problem and solution

I have been working with support since December 14 and today is December 28th trying to get my tablo to function on my wireless network. This problem has not be resolved until today.

We troubleshooted, restarted, reconfigured, reloaded, reinstalled, and redone everything and did remote access and remote configuration everything except for replacing the unit.

Well, today, I decided to take matters into my own hands and troubleshoot it myself since you guys can’t figure out what the problem is. I’ve done several experiments and tests, and I never reinstalled anything. Never reloaded anything, I just reconfigured stuff. And here’s the deal.

(PROBLEM AND SOLUTION) The Tablo software / firmware that is in the tablo unit will not properly function if the wireless network name has a apostrophe in the name. For instance, it will not properly connect and work to Bill’s House however, it will connect and work properly to Bills House . And the only difference is. the apostrophe. I renamed my network and it is now working.

My firmware is UpToDate 2.2.54

That is an amazing discovery!

a very painful one, three weeks of disappointment and thinking the unit was defective. A lot of calls and time on hold, try this do this with the same non functioning results

I wonder how many others didn’t realize this was their problem and gave up in frustration. I have been helping with a lot of Tablo amateur tech support here and elsewhere. Added to my standard questions will now be, “what is the name of your wifi network?”

I have to wonder if it’s an issue with the punctuation, or that everything is now connecting to an entirely new network. Hopefully @TabloTV will have answers!

I can’t remember the character but back in my engineering/working days we were having a problem with one computer system not working properly with another system. It took weeks but someone finally figured out that certain shared file names could not include a certain character. Once that was figured out it was smooth sailing.

I remember now. The characters were underscore “_” and dash or minus “-”. Our files all included one or the other but this new software couldn’t handle it so we had to change them all to the other. This was a pretty long time ago.

Unless you have a really old router that needs a firmware update, punctuation shouldn’t be an issue. Or you could have wireless hardware stacked.

edit:
I just tested this in my home, Bills and Bill’s Network… and it worked according to the punctuation. So it worked correctly like it should.

It sounds like you may have 2 different wireless SSID’s running.

You can have Emoji’s in your SSID name now, so punctuation bug is a thang of the past.

The router may support it, but not all devices will. It depends on the network drivers/software they use. I wouldn’t be surprised that many IoT devices are using very, very old drivers/software.

I just discovered (almost) the same thing today. You are ahead of me by 3 days! My network password contains an apostrophe and would not work until I removed it. Now, like in your network name issue, it works. In think I may just use my guest network. Lots of devices are using my main network password…

Tablo - can you please fix this!!!??!

I’ve been having the same problem with our 3 yr old Legacy Quad since Dec 28th!!! Support is no help at all. The weird thing is, I haven’t been able to sign in to my account either!

Thank you for clarifying this. I knew what you meant when you said it didn’t work, but I’m guessing others thought you meant that with punctuation yours also didn’t work.
