2TB external drive will not format on Tablo gen 4

The external drive shows up on my pc ok, but after formatting on the Tablo, it says “No storage device” or something similar. If I plug it back into my pc it cannot recognize it as a drive. Not sure what is happening. This is SSD I am using.

Hi! I don’t have the answer, but please let us know whether you’re on a Roku, or what type of app. Maybe we can figure it out together.

Am using the Tablo on Roku. Thanks

Try to record a show, and see what happens

Will do.

Tried recording. Went to the library and said error and could not get to library, until I stopped the recording. At the storage, it said it had a 2TB drive that needs formatting, but when trying to format, it just keeps circle spinning and never formats. I don’t think the drive is bad since it showed up on my pc before I tried formatting with the Tablo. Seems Tablo formatting bricked the ext. drive. PC does not recognize it now.

The PC will not recognize the drive after Tablo formats with EXT4. You should be able to see the drive in Disk Management (right click Start button). Windows will see a partition on the drive, but won’t be able to see any files without 3rd party software. I’d try removing existing partition on that drive and let Tablo format it again.

Be sure you are working with the correct drive in Disk Management.

Thanks will do.

Did not have a partition, but did remove volume and tried again. Same thing as before. It tried to format the ext. drive, but could never finish. Plugged into PC and drive does not show up. I guess I can assign a drive number if that would help. Thanks for the help.

Before going further check to see if there is a firmware update available for the drive.

Assigning a drive letter in Windows probably won’t change the situation. It is good though that the drive showed up in Disk Management.

Will try an update.

Tried about everything I can think of and all suggestions and it seems that the generic drive is not compatible with Tablo even though it does show up, but just cannot be formatted.
Many thanks for all the help. I guess I will have to bit the bullet and get a WD drive or another name brand and try it.

Any info on compatible drives that are working with Tablo would be appreciated.

This article should help @mcr1010 .

Thanks. Just ordered a WD 2tb Elements as suggested by Tablo. It should pair up just fine.

Thanks for your help.

For anyone else wondering what drive they should/could use with their 4th gen. I had a stack of old hard drives from old desktops and laptops laying around that I recently went through looking for anything valuable then reformatted them. I also had an old self powered hard drive enclosure not in use. So I put a 500mb WD drive (at least 12 years old) in the (equally as old) enclosure and hooked it up to my Tablo. It’s working fine. Everything we record we watch and delete. The drive reports 99% available most of the time.

Good idea.

Tablo should prompt you to reformat when you install a new drive. However, I have found they can sometimes get stuck.

If you reformat the drive and try again if may work. Windows typically formats SSDs to NTFS which Tablo should recognize and prompt you to reformat. I don’t use Windows, I use Linux (Ubuntu), so mine defaults to ext4, which is what the Tablo uses anyway. Windows does not natively support ext4, but you can get utilities that support it (sorry, I can’t remember the name).

Regardless, a fresh reformat may solve the problem.

Just for reference, this is the SSD that I use. (HOLY COW! The price has more than doubled since I bought mine.
