Tips for narrowing down what is making my 4th Gen Tablo a bad experience

We have a 4th gen Tablo that simply put is unreliable and flat-out a bad experience trying to rely on it for our primary live TV solution.

Problems include:

  • very sluggish viewing (lots of “spinning” icon on the screen) that sometimes correlates with an overheated device (very warm to touch)
  • live over the air TV with frequent failed to decode video/audio messages (retry/dismiss prompts)
  • live TV that (between “failed to decode” incidents) gets jittery (audio keeps going while video freezes for a moment or a few seconds) - maddening when watching anything, e.g., a live sporting event.

Does Tablo have anything that can speed up diagnosis here, like internal diagnostics or logging, that could make it easier than the customer wondering and individually investigating possible causes:

  • need a replacement device due to heat dissipation problems?
  • need a better antenna position, or antenna equipment itself?
  • need a better/newer/faster external storage drive?
  • in-home wifi network contributing to the issue?
  • Chromecast with Google TV device resource issue when running Tablo app?
  • Samsung TV resource issue when running Tablo app there (as an alternative to running on the Chromecast)?
  • Phone app sometimes seems a smoother experience compared to “TV” apps.
  • etc.

I’m a customer, not an engineer for Tablo, so am hoping there are some customer-friendly approaches or capabilities that can be used to save me some time

This is almost certainly a home network or OTA reception issue.

The 2 magic ingredients to a “good” Tablo experience. Unfortunately, solution(s) can be simple, or more involved.

I think @sktn77a and @classicrockguy are correct - it usually boils down to network and antenna reception.

Where is your antenna located?..indoors?..mounted in the attic?..or mounted outdoors? What kind or model of antenna do you have? Then, can you send the Sharable Link to your RabbitEars.info signal search page so we can see your distances from the towers and RF channels?

Then, you might want to download InSSIDer or some other Wifi signal checker like Wifiman onto your phone and check your wifi signal at your wifi device(s). Keep in mind that your phone or laptop will probably have better wifi capability than your streaming device.

Which streaming device(s) are you using and which are wired and which are using wifi? Is the Tablo on wifi or wired? If you’re using your TV as your streamer with Tablo installed, is it wired or using wifi? How old is the TV and what brand is it?

If your phone app is working but your streaming devices aren’t, this usually points to the devices not having the network bandwidth or good enough wifi connection. You might want to consider investing in a newer FireTV 4k Max, AppleTV or Roku Ultra that use Wifi6 or ethernet.

I hope this helps some.

EDIT: was thinking about it some and it could also be streaming device compatibility.
