Tablo Web App Update (v. 1.9.29)

Hello everyone,

We have pushed a new update for the web app at my.tablotv.com. No action is required on your part in order to receive the update.

Tablo Web App Update (v. 1.9.29)

  • Fix for Google deprecating and removing WebSQL in upcoming Chrome 110
  • Other small bug fixes and improvements

This new release is needed for the continued use of my.tablotv.com via the Chrome web browser.

The current version of the web app uses an older technology called WebSQL, and support for this is being removed in Chromeā€™s upcoming browser release. As such, it was necessary to change the way the web app accesses your Tablo.

This switch will have very few visible changes. The main differences you will see are the loss of several guide filters: New and Genres will no longer be present, as well as the Most Recent filter in the Recordings screen. Beyond that, everything should work exactly as it always has.

For those of you who have or currently use the web app on Firefox, this will be identical to that.

@TabloForumAdmin, will the missing filters be restored at some point in the future?

I can see that this update is also affecting Microsoft Edge.

In case youā€™re not aware, the new Microsoft Edge is based on the same technology behind a browser we already support: Google Chrome.

Itā€™s basically all over the internet.

I noticed right away today the missing ā€œMost Recentā€ filter on the Recordings screen because thatā€™s how I could quickly see my newest programs --all at the top together.

Shows I saw and didnā€™t delete because I may want to watch again were all at the bottom.

Until now. Now theyā€™re scattered all over the screen mixed in with old shows or even off-screen down below when scrolling.

The code for these filters was already written and working so wouldnā€™t it be fairly easy to merge them back into this newer update???

I also used the ā€œGenresā€ filter to discover new shows on topics like Animals, Nature, Sci-Fiction, LGBT, etc. It worked great and I hope someone can find time to bring these deleted functions back soon.

Would really like the ā€œMost Recentā€ to return. Itā€™s sorely missed alreadyā€¦thereā€™s no way in the web app, which is most of my usage, to know a new episode has recorded. Please, pleaseā€¦this is had made the web app almost useless to me. :frowning:

I also heavily use the ā€œMost Recentā€ tab, which is now gone. Iā€™ve tried Chrome, Edge and Vivaldi and all are missing it. Vivaldi is what Iā€™;ve been using lately for Tablo and first notice the ā€œMost Recentā€ missing. This is such a time saver to have, especially for the news, which is primarily what I use Tablo for.

Hopefully it can be brought back soon.

I missed the ā€˜most recentā€™ tab today and got the response from support as to what had happened. Iā€™m hoping something can be done to get a feature to list the various recorded programs in descending order based upon most recent episode recording time. It is quite time consuming and frustrating to figure out when a new episode of something you donā€™t watch daily has been recorded. I think for now I have found a clunky work around-the androi app on my phone seems to still have the feature for ā€˜most recentā€™. So I can go there to see what is recent then use the web app on my laptop to watch as it is my preferred way to watch it. I am also thinking I might be able to somehow cast from my phone to the laptop. But Iā€™m hoping in a not too distant timeframe something can be provided to have this badly needed feature work.

For those looking for a workaround for the ā€˜Most Recentā€™ filter missing, @BIGROMO has mentioned a good idea. If you have the Tablo app on your smartphone or tablet, the filter will still be present on those apps, so you will be able to use it as a guide to what has most recently recorded.

Unfortunately itā€™s a much more complicated process on the web app to restore the missing filters due to this backend change we needed to make.

Sort by Most recent recordings was a very handy functionality. When do you intend to bring it back. Thank you

Well. Nice words fail me. The most needed feature, gone.

Might it be possible to allow access to the previous web site version until you have the full feature set restored? Something like http://my.tablotv.com/1.9.28

If there in no support for it in any browserā€¦ how do you see it working? Supporting an unsupported product?

Not sure if this is a question for me (alm) but I will add a data point.
Right now, as in Right Now, I have both 1.9.28 and 1.9.29 both running in browser tabs on my laptop. I can switch tabs and watch the Grammys at slightly different points in the recordings. This is with the Vivaldi browser (Chromium based). Here is the running version info:

Vivaldi 5.6.2867.58 (Stable channel) (Pending update 5.6.2867.62) (64-bit)
Revision 9df76632e9f4155daed8a9a5a4c7ed94f52d3f42
OS Windows 10 Version 22H2 (Build 19045.2486)
JavaScript V8 10.8.168.25
User Agent Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/108.0.0.0 Safari/537.36

Note that the Chrome internals are at 108 (Iā€™m assuming) and an update is pending. Iā€™ve just now turned off automatic updates. From this I think that my suggestion to allow continued use of 1.9.28 (with Most Recent feature) will work for users that are not yet at Chrome 111 (or whatever the number turns out to be when websql is actually gone).

FYI: You can Google ā€œchrome websqlā€ and visit more about all this at Deprecating and removing Web SQL - Chrome Developers

There are a couple of interesting points in the developer article found at the link just above:

  • [:round_pushpin: We are here.] Web SQL access in insecure contexts is no longer available as of Chromium 110 (Tue, Feb 1, 2023). An enterprise policy to keep using the feature is available from Chromium 110 (Tue, Feb 1, 2023) to Chromium 111 Tue, Mar 1, 2023.
  • [:crystal_ball: In the future.] The final step will be to remove Web SQL completely in all contexts, but no date has been set for this step yet.

Pending update - technically your browser is outdated.

I know tablo doest use secure connections across your home network. Generally support moves with the current product. Sure you can use it, but you should have realistic expectations, itā€™s defunct [or becoming].

ā€œThe webā€ continues to grow. Remember when wd had static pages?

Came to the forum trying to figure out where the ā€œgenresā€ filter went. Makes sense - I realize behind the scenes this may be very complicated as youā€™re moving to a new technology/platform. Just wanted to add my vote to keeping this feature in focus. Would love it if this type of filter could be re-introduced sometime. Thanks guys!

Losing the ability to sort recordings by most recent on the web & PC app has severely affected the usability of TABLO for me. My main interface to watching video is via computer.

I think the WEB app for firefox had removed WEBSQL a while ago. And firefox hadnā€™t had recent since the switchover.
