An update to the 4th Generation Tablo app for Roku is now available.
This includes several improvements that should make your day-to-day Tablo use more enjoyable.
You should see the update shortly, but if you’d like to get it right away, navigate to the Tablo app on your Roku device’s home screen and hit the star button (*) on your Roku remote. Then select ‘Check for Updates’.
Here’s what you can expect:
Tablo Roku App (4th Gen) Update (v. 1.4.0)
Improvements to connectivity screens
Improvements to ensure smoother transitions in and out of Offline Mode
Improvements to play vs. OK remote control behavior to ensure compatibility with all live airings
The biggest changes in this release are to the connectivity screens. As you can see in the screenshot above, the app now provides additional information about your Tablo device(s) as well as troubleshooting tips to resolve connectivity issues.
The improvements to remote control behavior mean you can now use the PLAY button vs. the OK button on your Roku remote to immediately start playback of ANY live airing on any screen, not just on the live TV grid.
Since this update, I have not been able to use it with my legacy device.
When I switch from my 4th gen to my legacy, it is fine for about 10 seconds, then it freezes. I have to do a force quit in order to close the app. Then when I open the app again, it is back on the 4th gen device.
I have rebooted the legacy device and reinstalled the app.
Yea, Roku just updates at will and that is one bad aspect of Roku. The new Home Screen is annoying.
Even Apple doesn’t ram updates down your throat. You have to be naive enought to accept the newest rev and then suffer the consequences till there’s an update to kill the bugs.
I wish Roku was more Apple than it is and with FOX as the new owner who knows what comes…
Is a better question - since all of this information is being sucked off of the tablo servers what happens when your ISP is down.
I have both multiple legacy devices and a gen 4. The gen 4 apps are abysmal. They never really get fixed. I’m not such a glutton for punishment that I wouldn’t use the legacy apps to access a legacy device.
The Roku News menu has never been correct where as legacy filer by news genre works. The Home screen keeps telling me BS like “Upcoming Network Premiers” that are episode 31 and even the actual station schedule has it marked as a repeat, On and On it goes.
If you don’t like the new Roku Home screen, you can turn off recommendations and continue watching. There are many posts and videos online you can search for on how to do it. With both turned off, it looks just like the old one did with them already turned off.
Well, I don’t know what happened, but I can’t reproduce it now.
Somewhere between clearing the cache, deleting the app and re-adding it, rebooting the Tablo, router, and Roku, and you guys looking at it, the problem has gone away.
