Been using a Gen-4 Tablo for well over a year now, and seemed a bit “buggy” early on… But over the many, many months, the entire experience has just gotten better and better… Especially the new menus (Latest, Coming Soon, Conflicts, etc..) Overall, VERY pleased…
But in the last many weeks, seems that the Tablo (Gen4) will re-boot itself, during programs, and often several times during the same program… It’s usually not a big deal, but sometimes it’s so often it’s really annoying…
And I just need to re-start the program and it picks up right where it left off, so I’m not missing anything, but it’s kindof a newish event that keeps happening, but is this happening to anyone else??
And it’s not a reception issue, and happens with both OTA and FAST programming… Again, the whole experience has gotten better and better over time, but there’s just this one new “glitch” that is a little frustrating…
Thank you for any suggestions that anyone can offer…
And it doesn’t always happen, but it actually happened again twice, in the time it took to type this note… big sigh
Hey there @bcb - Sorry to hear you’re running into this.
Can you describe a bit more what you mean by this?
When it happens, do you see the Tablo’s LED turn off and then start blinking before becoming solid again?
Or is there something you’re seeing within the app itself? Any error messages?
When this happens, are you watching a program live or a recording?
LED does not turn itself off, that I’ve noticed.. But the next time it happens, the blue light will be the first thing I look for now..
The program just stops for a second, goes to a blank screen, then the Tablo re-boots itself, just like it’s booting up the first time that day..
I only use the app on my TV, not the app on my phone, so just watching the program on my TV (older Samsung, with a Google TV dongle).
No error messages that I’ve seen..
Only on recordings, but I almost never watch live TV, so can’t really say…
But to your question, I will re-boot the Google dongle, and see if that helps..
Re-booting the Tablo unit myself, doesn’t make any difference..
And again, other than that little new “quirk”, it’s been fantastic…
Thank you..
And I should add, I have TWO - 2-tuner Gen4 Tablo units, and I just realized I didn’t pay any attention if it’s just one unit that does that, or both… Let me experiment a bit here, and if it’s both, then it’s gotta be a dongle issue, not a Tablo issue… Hmmm..
I also suppose I could re-install the app on my TV…
I will update this when I have more info for you.. TY
OK so you haven’t noticed the LED on the Tablo device flashing during these times, but the app will crash and then automatically bring you back to the splash screen (the colourful animation)?
Yes, exactly that…
I don’t think the blue light goes off or changes, but I will verify that the next few times it happens… TY
Okay, it just happened again, on my secondary Tablo… Same thing..
Blue light does not flicker or change, the picture just stops, the Tablo crashes, and then quickly reboots right to the splash screen and then the home page…
So this has got to be a Google dongle issue, I think… Let me experiment more here, but right now I don’t think it’s a Tablo issue, it’s a Google dongle issue…
So maybe a false alarm here, and I just needed to think through it…
Thank you again for your help…
Just to follow up here, rebooting the Google TV dongle didn’t make any difference in my issue… So I deleted and re-installed the Tablo app from the TV, but that also doesn’t seem to make any difference, in either Tablo..
Also went back into the Google TV “Settings”, and saw they had a System Update available… A “Security” patch, and a “System Stability & Improvements” patch..
I was thinking that might be it, so 20 minutes later, it’s downloaded and installed..
I had hope, but the end result is no change whatsoever…
And it’s the same process every time..
A one-second stoppage in the recording I’m watching -
then a dark blank screen for another second -
Then a Tablo re-start to the splash screen and then back to the Tablo Home page..
And no flickering or changes in the blue lights on the Tablo units at any point in the process…
So now I’m convinced it’s not a Tablo issue, since it happens in both of my Tablo units, and if it was a SW/FW update issue from Tablo, more people would have this issue..
So that leaves the Google TV dongle, and I now have the latest software update on that too… And other than this self-restarting issue, both Tablos work fantastic, with a great picture. It’s just a little annoying sometimes, in the times it happens multiple times in one movie… But again, I now doubt it’s an actual Tablo issue…
Regardless, I appreciate your help in trying to understand this…
Thank you..
Yeah, i can’t watch anything after update it constantly crashes and reboots the app, Im seriously about to take a sledgehammer to it and mail it back to tablo! Wasted my hard earned money on this overpriced pos. I can’t even disconnect the hd and watch the fies on my pc because these greedy heathens want to lock down every got damn thing
O-kayyyy… I wouldn’t go quite ~that~ far, but I hear ya, Ben…
It can be a bit frustrating sometimes..
There are times it doesn’t happen for a couple of hours, and other times…like now…it’s happened four times, and I’m only 32 minutes into this current movie…
This may be a record-setting day… LOL
I still have this problem, but as I see other’s commenting on the same type of issue, I’m back to thinking it’s a Tablo firmware update problem from some weeks ago…
Interestingly, it never seems to happen when I’m playing a 1-hr TV-series type show.. Nor does it happen during a 2-hour show like Dateline…
And only and always seems to happen (sometimes a few times, sometimes a number of times) while having a 2-3 hour movie on…
Not sure if that’s helpful, but it’s a consistent pattern…
Well, the problem seems to have gone away, for the last 48 hours+ anyway…
Even movies play all the way to the end, without the unit crashing and re-starting itself.. I am a happy man!!
It certainly sounds like a Tablo issue, although why it happens with both is a mystery. Sounds like either a bad Tablo or a bad power supply. Possibly (given it happens with both) an electrical issue in your house - surges, low voltage, appliance kicking in and out?
Hi.. Appreciate the reply..
But only happened while watching 2-3 hour ~movies~ (no other time or types of programs)…AND…it hasn’t happened at all in the last 72 hours (which is pretty fantastic!)
So I’m sure BOTH individual Tablos didn’t go bad at the exact same time, and pretty sure it wasn’t a power issue that seems to know when I was only watching movies..
But thank you…
And again, this issue went away about 3 days ago (perhaps Tablo itself changed something about 3 days ago?), and both Tablos had been 100% solid in every way since… I’m still curious but the situation seems to have resolved itself.. I don’t know..
this happens to me also, but It happens on a fire stick for me. It only happens on some shows but if it starts I can be sure it will happen on that same show.
Classic Firestick power supply issue. Are you using the power supply that came with it or are you plugging it into the TV’s USB socket?
Original Fire stick power supply always. Never use anything else. If I give up and switch to another program the problem goes away. Clear the cache and go back to the problem recording still re boots.
