I also turn off the LED… It’s annoying and maybe drops the temperature a little.
Also the more CPU work it does the hotter it gets. E.g. lots of active wifi connections, lots of channel surfing, updating guides, recording and playback and any USB external drives… It should hold up ok but it’s tiny and cute and can’t dissipate heat well. Like a hamster or a gerbel.
My first gen 4 bricked at about 11 months. It seemed to always be hot enough to fry an egg. The replacement sits on a cooling fan and seems to work better.
My gen 4 4-tuner sits on an open shelf in our media room. I’ve had it for two years now with no issues with heat or anything else. It does feel warm but not excessively.
I think as long as it room to vent… you should be ok. These newer chipsets can operate at higher temps. I also have mine on a UPS. You iphone runs at higher temps then the Tablo sits at.
The antenna, ethernet, and power cables hanging off the back of my 4th gen Tablo cause the front of the Tablo to be raised about an inch. I leave it like that so it has a lot more space underneath for cooling.
My 4th Gen is mounted vertically in a media cabinet on an outside basement wall. The temp is cool year-round. It’s actually a pretty sweet setup.
Well I’m an old IBM mainframe programmer and anything that’s not water-cooled is considered just a toy…
I agree with Tablo keeping the device passively cooled to keep it quiet. I think the passive cooling could be improved by using an aluminium case instead of plastic.
Have a feeling this “luxury” (e.g. aluminum) proposed rework would increase the price significantly. That is, I don’t think that will happen.
IBM AS400 programmer?
AS400 is the midrange now iSeries.
I started on:
1977 Burroughs midrange high speed 2700
1979 IBM 370/155
1980 IBM 370/145
1981 IBM 4381
1983 IBM 4341
1983 Magnussen 360 IBM plug compatible
1976 IBM 360/20
1978 IBM System 3 Model 8
1979 IBM 360/25
1979 IBM 360/30
2000 IBM RS/6000
2001 IBM 370/168
1987 Amdahl 380 IBM plug compatible
1985 Mohawk Data Systems mini computer
None were water cooled sadly. Unless you spilled your Koolaid.
There may be someone at Tablo that I used to work with from IBM. HPTS/CPCS/3890… Don S?
He always signed his email with “Cheers” after a contract in London UK.
Uh, “Cheers” has become the more international friendly sign off at the end of a message. Not just the UK anymore. Though maybe influenced by former British empire stuff.
Uh, diction?
