Switched from Legacy - Options we would like to see in 4th gen

Upgraded after several years with the legacy Tablo. Love that the 4th gen found 204 channels versus 89 on legacy. However, there are option we would like to see to 4th gen.

  1. Shows - when looking for shows to record comes up live now, networks, etc. Legacy grouped all shows. That would be nice option. We would look through all the listings from time to time and find shows we never heard of before.
  2. Library - option to organize by show rather than by day. We record whole seasons and binge watch. Legacy grouped by show. Can we have that as an option.
  3. Startup - Option to start somewhere other than home, i.e. library, live, etc. We don’t find home to be of much use for us.
  4. Live - Legacy had the option of going up to the time and jumping forward 12 hours. Really liked the feature. 4th gen has the option to jump to a day. Like that feature also.
  5. Deleting a recording - unless I’m doing it wrong after watching a show have to go back to show listing, click on the show again and then go to delete. Are we doing it wrong?
  6. Comment - Failed recordings don’t delete. Looks like they delete but next time I’m back in recordings it’s still there.

Overall we really like the 4th gen.

I agree with you 100%, especially #3. I find the Home absolutely useless.

Would like to add:

  1. Remove the progress bar and options from screen when you pause after a
couple seconds and/or use the Back button to clear it.
For me, most times I pause to look at something and it obscures the screen.

  2. Minimize key presses.
Most everything require two or more extra key presses to accomplish same operation as Legacy.
Example: After pausing live TV, it takes four key presses to go to previous channel vs Legacy two presses.

I have 3 Tablos. One legacy and two gen4. Pushing the Roku interface back button enough times takes me to where I can exit the Tablo. The legacy has the additional option to switch Tablos at that point whereas on the gen4 I have to do a lot of button pushes to get to the settings where I can do a few more button pushes before I get to the change Tablos setting. That’s a lot of button pushing just to change to anoher Tablo.

Thank you. Noticed the number of key presses to do the same thing but was going to leave that for a future topic. For example, going down the menu should not require a key press should switch to whatever is highlighted.

Overall I am impressed never dreamed it would find 115 additional channels.

Curious why more than one Tablo? We use one for the whole house. Would put the legacy Table back in service if I had a reason.

Could it be that just to record college football on Saturday takes 5 tuners.

Forgot one…

  1. DON’T automatically add new channels to guide.

The legacy has over one terabyte of movies that we don’t want to lose. The disks are keyed to their individual Tablo and can’t be moved to another. Disk mobility is one feature that is badly needed. If a tablo dies, all of the recordings virtually die with it.

The first gen4 is a dual. Too many conflicts with just two tuners so I got a quad to provide more tuners.

Some things that most people aren’t aware of. With the gen4 dual we can record or watch up to 4 programs simultaneously. The number jumps to eight with the quad. We can record four ota programs and four fast programs simultaneously with the quad. I haven’t seen this posted anywhere. This is a feature that Tablo should broadcast with a bull horn.

It is disappointing that we can’t record programs on close to half of the FAST channels due to license restrictions. I see some good movies that might come on overnight that I can’t record. Though I’ve been retired for almost twenty years, I still love my sleep. I unchecked all of those channels out of frustration when I would select one to record and get the message that recording is restricted.

I discovered this feature last year when I was beta testing the gen4

You can offload your movies that you recorded with your Legacy IF you can find the program that someone here wrote. I have it installed on my computer and it works great. Unfortunately, I can’t find the installation software anymore should that computer die.
I know what you mean about needing HDD to be able to be moved. I had a gen 4 die on me after 11 months. We save up and binge watch so POOF, those recordings are gone.
I have now switched to Plex DVR because those recordings can be read by any computer. I don’t understand why Tablo had to lock them down.

Sorry legacy was so much better. I had the legacy box for almost 10 years. This new box likes going to the home screen for no reason. This box is very unstable absolutely the worst. I am going to look into other options and if I find something that I like I will trash this garbage.

Hello @greg3 ,

The 4th Gen Tablo has a few delete options that may make things easier: How to Delete Recordings From Your 4th Generation Tablo – Tablo

Also, these channel surfing optons may help: 4th Generation Tablo - Player Features for Channel Surfing – Tablo

This is a great and informative post that deserves it’s own thread. People who are not following this thread will miss some important information

Thank you for the response. My comments are:
#5 - I spent an hour or more reading and trying out the links you suggested. In my mind it doesn’t get to the heart of the matter. We don’t save shows. We delete after watching. For us that’s very simple and easy. 4th gen deleting requires several additional steps.
#1 - Channel surfing options places all shows on one screen for easy browsing. Jumping around and a lot of clicks are necessary.

In addition numbers 2, 3, 4 and 6 were not addressed. 4th gen is a good product in that it provides a lot, and I mean a lot more channels to watch (and that’s outstanding) but almost everything seems to more complicated. Legacy is nice and simple. And I’m a simple person at heart.

For the other items we expressed those to the Product Team as customer feedback. Thank you for sharing.

Just upgraded from Legacy to 4Gen. Our local PBS station has classic movies on Saturday evenings. Legacy allowed me to find them by selecting the channel number in Movies. The only way I’ve found to do it in 4Gen is by scrolling forward to Saturday in Live. Am I missing something?

You should list your equipment. Is it ROKU, Firestick, etc…

Someone with the same setup might be able to help you. I use ROKU and Android mobile.

I feel the same way. I upgraded (downgraded?) to a gen 4 when my legacy tablos started acting kinda weird. Maybe that was something on Tablos end, but I was concerned about losing recordings. FFWD 10 months after getting the Gen 4… it died. Yeah, Tablo replaced it, but I lost all my recordings. I will run the legacies until they die (my wife likes them), but I’ve started migrating to Plex DVR w/ Homerun HD. The interface is kinda funky, but usable. The plus it that it records to my HDD AND if something goes wrong, those files are playable via USB! Good luck to all the gen 4 guinea pigs (no offense, that’s directed at Tablo, shame on them for such a lousy product).

Yep Tablo 4th generation should have a way to be able to take the external storage and install on a new machine at least. For my really important recordings I still use an old digital converter box with a USB hard-drive. Right now I have it set-up to record weekly by time slot Amazing Race. My wife and I have been watching this show for years. This way if Tablo screws up I still have it to watch. We don’t have Paramount+ so this is the show I’m extra careful on LOL.

I wish there were digital converter boxes with multiple tuners built in. For the Price I have learned to live with Tablo’s quirks.
