Surge Protection

I just order my 4th tablo since May of 2024 due to being fried by an electric surge . For some of them, it was the power supply, but for the last 2 it was the unit itself. They were all plugged into a surge protector, along with some other devices. The other devices were not affected. Are these Tablos just that fragile? Does anyone have a suggestion for dealing with this? Maybe a surge protector recommendation?

I have mine on a UPS Battery Backup Surge Protector which protects against brownouts and surges. AAMOF, I have them on my TiVos and my PCs. This is the model I currently use because it allows me to change the batteries, but the price has gotten kind of out of control for something as cheap as a Tablo. Amazon sells their own brand for $50.

Thank you. Have you had a surge on that battery backup? I think it is a possibility that the surge came through the coax from the antenna. I’m looking at a UPS with coax terminals. I think I will try that, because as I mentioned the other devices on the same surge protector were not affected.

I have used Tripp Lite Isobar surge suppressors for decades. They are pricey, but have a very good reputation. I use the ISOBLOK2-0 at the wall outlet before my UPS for my work computer and I use the ISOBAR2-6 in my network closet. I plug it into the wall and my UPS into it.

If your antenna is outside, you might want to add surge suppression to the coaxial as well. I use a VCE Coaxial Surge Lightning Protector. If you want something a little more substantial, you might try the XRDS-RF Lightning Arrestor. It has a connector that you can run a wire to ground.

Thank you!

I actually had a lightning surge. None of my UPS’ got damaged or damaged any equipment. What DID damage a lot of my equipment was through my ethernet network. Since then, I do have a coax surge protector and an ethernet surge protector.

But, from what I understand, this is really no match for a direct lightning strike. When I got hit, a power transformer was taken out on my road, so it was not a direct strike. But it took out my TV, two TiVos, a printer and my router, all connected by ethernet.
