I agree, Harmony remotes are the way to go, especially the “hub” models. I lost my Shield remote a week or two ago in the couch and I haven’t bothered to search for it. I only grab the Shield controller when I want to play some games or I want to use voice search and I don’t have my phone.

I think it should work, as long as you can plug the OTG into the Nexus player. The NP has limited room at the back and it would not fit OTG that has the angle plug. Does your hub have power input? If not, then it may not be able to power some USB hard drives. But since you have both the OTG and the hub, why not just plug them in and try yourself?
